Petition to Require Pet Food Companies to be Held Accountable for Damages

Dogs and CatsWE, THE UNDERSIGNED:

Request that the U.S. Congress enact legislation to require pet food manufacturers and the companies that market those pet food brands to be held financially liable for any medical costs related to or contributing to the illness and/or death of a pet that can be reasonably attributed to the food consumed by the pet. And that all pet foods include the name of the manufacturer, not just the brand under which it is sold.

This petition is in response to the thousands of pet parents and owners who have suffered under the Menu Foods recall and their slow response that started on March 16th, 2007.

Sign after the jump.

In creating this petition, our motive is three-fold:

  1. First, we want to ease the pain and suffering of those who have lost their pets due to mistakes and negligence of pet food makers. The loss or illness of a pet can be emotionally devastating. On top of it, the financial burden of uninsured veterinary treatment can be a double-whammy, leading pet parents and their families to significant financial damage — often affecting other family members such as kids and the elderly. This legislation will create a venue for settling these cases fairly and out of court, eliminating the need for a lengthy court case, which companies rely on in order to reduce the likelihood of payout.
  2. Second, create a financial motive for pet food makers and marketers to set higher standards for pet food. We want to let them know that consumers are interested in higher-grade pet food. And that the longer a company waits in issuing warnings or recalls related to their product, the larger the potential financial damage. This new law would hold the manufacturers (often smaller, less financially sound organizations) and also the larger corporations that market the branded foods — who ultimately control what goes in them.
  3. Third, a clear public disclosure of who actually makes the food. Since the financial liability falls to the brand as well as the manufacturer, the name of the company that actually produced the food should be obvious to the consumer. How much clearer would this recall have been if the food was labeled “Made by Menu Foods”?

Once the final tally of the pet deaths is complete, the petition will be delivered to the head of the congressional committee that controls FDA funding (Dave Obey, D-WI, chairman of House Appropriations Committee).

My cats became crippled whilst eating Nutro dried food. The girls recovered after we removed this dried food from their diet. The symptoms matched those of Salinomycin Induced Polyneuropathy as recorded in The Netherlands by 823 cats in 1996.

If a company sells it as food to promote health for pets, that company is responsible for poisoning of pets. Plain and simple. No loopholes, no lawyering out of it.

Mr. Spitz liked the wet food, and his brothers didn’t. Funny thing they are still alive. The vet showed me crystals under a microscope identical to those I saw on TV which a couple of Canadian scientists were examining when they hit on the cause of this whole scam. Money can’t repair the heartache, but it sure would help on the vet bills.

I am so mad about these awful things that have made the pets sick,my daughter has spent over 7 thousand dollars to keep her chihuahua alive. I am more than happy to sign.

  25. Carmella Collins says:

My chihuahua has chronic kidney failure due to tainted pet food
I have had to pay out a lot of money and will continue to have to
as long as she is alive., not to mention the stress on her and myself.

I think they should all be accountable for thier actions.

It’s a sad time in this world when we cannot feel safe feeding our pets foods that animals have enjoyed for years–what does that say about our own food? This country has gotten so greedy by farming out everything to other countries, even so much as to risk the health of our pets, ourselves and our children (just a short time ago it was the toy/lead paint recall). Someone has to stand up for us and our animals. My pets are my kids and I will not sit quietly while they poison us all to save a few dollars.

After almost a year (really longer than that) I am still so disgusted with the pet food industry. Lost two of my best friends to this and my new cat throws up dry food all the time. I’ve tried numerous both better and lower quality brand pet foods. I believe it’s not gotten any better than a year ago. Sad to say, I am completely disgusted with our legislators.

My daughter lost both of her cats to Kidney Disease and now I know why. She trusted the pet food industry to love her family members as much as she did. We lost loving and wonderful pets. “Puddin” who died a few years ago. She was only ten and “Motor” passed away from the same disease only months ago and she had just turned ten. My daughter still cries. Greedy, selfish, lying low lives and some day they will get what they deserve. Our 15 week old Norfork Terrier “Oly” started out with his breeders who put him on Eukanuba and because of all of these sad and pathetic excuses for human beings, our puppy has been removed promptly from the clutches of pet food scum bags and he will never be a victim. Lifes Abundance - Thank God for you ! and good top grade wholesome food and organically grown. Excuse me while I save my puppy’s life….
and PS. After our puppy lives a long, healthy and happy life and it is time to pass, he will never ever be given over and surrendered to anyone who will “take care of him for us.”

I just had my cat put down. The vet said she had a low red blood cell count indicating leaukemia but she was healthy up till i used a new brand of canned cat food. first she had diarea, then she lost weight rapidly. I read that contaminated food can lower the red blood count too. ( I don’t believe she had leaukemia as my other cats don’t have it. )

I threw out the can so i can’t do anything about it now. I hope that the industry will take responsibility in the future to protect our furry babies and save us from heartbreak!!!

I want to give my regards to everyone that lost an animal or that is now suffering from this horrible event. Its sick that these company are poisoning our loved ones. I have one dog his name is Stewart and he means the world to me. Stewart is my only child and I would do anything for him! It makes me so mad that I have to worry if what he is eating will make him ill. Especially when they state on these bags that these foods are to insure your pet a healthy life. I hope one day we will have a honest world that isn’t out to kill us or our love ones! My thoughts and prayers are with you all!

My germanshepard dog died 2-25-08 from kidney failure. I fed him Nutro NAtural Choice for a year untill the recall. I am so angry at the dog food companies. He was only 8 yrs old. We miss him so much! He was part of our family. We are heart broken. Dolores and Jerry Crowton.

  41. Anita says:

I recently lost my dog after he suffered what appeared to be kidney failure. He had been eating Nutro natural up to when I took him to the vet.
I was not informed this dry food was part of the list of recalled foods.
I’ve taken this very seriously and have tried to feed my other dog more cautiously, however, he is now showing signs of illness. How can we ever really know what we’re feeding them? It makes me sick to my stomach to think I may have killed my first dog. He was my best friend and my heart breaks as I recall his suffering, and now I worry about my other dog.
I’m willing to spend more to know I’m feeding my pet good quality, but each time I consider another food, I read another horror story. Something must be done to stop this horiffic injustice being done to animals. They are innocent creatures and do not deserve to die like this.

I lost a pet to the Poisonous food from Eukanuba moist & savory puppy last year and it was horrible and painful for our family to have lost our little baby chihuahua Rocky, till this day we remember him and our tears just flow. No pet owner should have to live through something like that again! We are hoping the settlement to the lawsuit hurts then enough to change the way things are done now when it comes to our pets foods on the market.

My beautiful English Sheepdog died in my arms after eating Happy Tails Chicken Treats. I searched afterward to see if there were any reports of recall on them and was unable to find anything at the time. Now I see there are others that have reported problems. This has got to stop!!
