I'm following up on what I heard from the goldfishconnection.com in response to an email I sent questioning their ingredients. The response I got from 'Rick' was:

<strong>"All of our food is made in an USDA inspected plant under very strict regulations. Many of the same foods we use are used to feed fish for human consumption and are tested for any toxins."<strong>

I wrote back right away saying that it is not reassuring to find out the same feed was used because of the Tembec/Uniscope fiasco and I sent him a link to the story. He wrote back:

"Monika,
Thanks for the info.
Rick"

So I point blank asked him in a follow up if they ever used binding agents from Uniscope.. since then... *crickets*.. no response.. his food went right into the garbage last night.. I would say be wary of food from goldfishconnection.com (btw, the food isn't just for goldfish)

“Monika,
Thanks for the info.
Rick”

So I point blank asked him in a follow up if they ever used binding agents from Uniscope.. since then… *crickets*.. no response.. his food went right into the garbage last night.. I would say be wary of food from goldfishconnection.com (btw, the food isn’t just for goldfish)

Besides Atlantis (Sargeant Brand) fish food being recalled another company called ZEIGLER has recalled shrimp feeds for ornamental fish. FDA info
here: http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/ziegler06_07.html

I also just wrote Hikari and they sent me this in response:

Monika - Hikari has always stood for superior quality and the recent scare in no way will impact that. We constantly test our product raw ingredients before use to verify no unwanted items are included and since we are the only fish food maker that controls our entire production process we can be assured what we want in the food is actually what is. Others, as the dog food companies have found out, are at the mercy of the product producer. All our wheat-gluten is from sources that are not impacted by the Chinese problem. We appreciate you taking the time to contact us and your interest in your aquatic pet's well being!

Now i'm just waiting to here from the people at goldfishconnection.com who sell the ProGold food I am feeding my goldfish (they also make food for tropicals).

Decided to go ahead and mention the foods I was/now am feeding.

Previous BAD food is Tetramin Flakes for tropical fish.

Current food is Top Fin freeze dried medley (myoisis shrimp, bloodworms and daphnia I believe) and Freeze Dried Tubifex worms.

Took them long enough. I already had to switch from flakes to freeze dried goods. Our fish were dying and didn't put two and two together until I read someone elses blog at MSNBC about fish tank problems. Sure enough as soon as I switch from the mixed item flakes(wheat gluten, etc).. all my fish regained weight and the dying fish stopped (I suspect the living we still had stopped eating they were so skinny.)

Also have a good friend tell us of their issues and we told them to change to freeze dried whole food. He thought we were overreacting/exagerating until the change cured his issues immediatly as it did ours.

Guess people's PET fish mean even less than their furbeasts for it to take this long..

(PS the brand I fed is not the brand recalled above.. FISH FOOD BUYERS BEWARE!)

My fish went from okay to really not okay overnight. Literally floating on the top of the tank. This happened twice in the last 2-3 years. No obvious sign of the usual disease's but it was similar to swin bladder and lack of oxygen. I moved it from fresh water to fresh water (making sure water was uncontaminated and temp was as consistent as possible) two to three times over the course of 24 hrs and replaced food. It recovered each time. Scared the heck out of me, anyway, and not too easy on him, either.

I use more than one food so was never able to pin down if food was the problem. The original water was clean and not polluted so it doesn't appear
it was the environment .

Thanks, Monika, for mentioning the brands you use. Local stopped carrying
a favorite and we were reduced to other commercial source. Fish food shopping on the agenda as it is.

I was never feeding that actual brand. What I stopped feeding were any fish food I had that contained ingredients that were at the time associated with melamine contamination. I did a search (and posted on Itchmo) of all pet foods that contained Rice Protein Concentrate and were not yet recalled and sure enough all of the ones I posted were later recalled.

I then, as precaution, checked labels of all pet foods I had which contained RPC, glutens, all other protein concentrates (vegetable, soy, fish, etc.) then I realized not only can I be in danger (as a vegetarian I eat tons of wheat gluten and protein conentrates, etc.) but my goldfish (I have 5 in 2 tanks) needed their food screened as well (turned out to be Wardley flakes that had to go based on my assumption of having sub-par ingredients, besides, they're made by Hartz so that was reason enough) and stuck to my Hikari and Pro Gold foods. So far so good.

Nice picture of a beautiful fish Monika. I'm glad you stopped back then feeding that stuff.

Trudy {posts here} has said she's lost a couple of her Koi recently. She's wondering if it's the food now too. Koi are So expensive.
Someone told her about someplace that will do a fish necropsy on them.

I do wonder if the "pet fish" foods are simaliarly tainted {amount ppm/b}, to the foods for ones they set free in the wild.

So it looks like at least One company s paying attention and recalling the food {now finally}.

Must be ok to set free the wild and never know the issues they might have.
Scheeesch!
