    USDA releases poultry for processing

Testing confirms that meat from poultry fed rations supplemented with pet food scraps containing melamine and related compounds is safe for human consumption. Based on the validated test results, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will allow approximately 80,000 birds held on farms in Indiana to be released and approved for processing.

It’s Safe! Trust Us! The USDA said so!

This isn’t a pet food question but I was wondering about spices. Central Market sells ground spices in the bulk foods area and that’s what I usually buy. Now I’m thinking it is better to buy whole spices and grind them myself.
I guess I’ll start asking them where their spices come from. I don’t use powdered garlic ( I use fresh) because I’m pretty sure that does come from China.

  5. Tom Paine says:

Ginger, garlic (bulbs), honey, organic black beans (sold at Trader Joe’s), frozen “organic” produce sold at Whole Foods — all these and more come from China. I am now buying locally grown, unprocessed food, foregoing restaurants and fast food. It is becoming more difficult to find food, but the resulting confidence I have in what I purchase is worth it.

I have been home cooking my dogs’ food since the beginning of the recall, and the major improvement in their health has been a revelation. Like so many others, I now believe that the commercially prepared dog food was in fact killing them. To all pet food manufacturers: I WILL NEVER PURCHASE YOUR PRODUCTS AGAIN! ! !

When - Where - What is it?

  7. Zoe says:

    Tom Paine,

I buy unprocessed organic food too, though it is difficult to find all local. I haven’t had any fast food in years and I got tired of paying restaurants for bad food that was potentially harmful. If I can’t cook it myself I don’t eat it.

In fact, I’m getting ready to start a small garden in my back yard. The spices were the last thing. I’m a curry addict so I don’t know how to get around that!

  8. Zoe says:

Once I finish weaning my cats off their dry food, I will never purchase commercial pet food products again either.

  9. Helen says:

Zoe: You can get coriander by letting cilantro go to seed. Grind up the seeds.
