Not sure what we are allowed to say on here anymore. However, I did open a claim with the company that made the food I switched to when he got so sick. Even though it was not on recall list. As I said yesterday, Vet bill was over 2K. We had switched our 2 labs, and both cats over to this food, and all had GI problems. However, by far Jerry was the worst, he could not even get out of bed, it came on so fast.

    Donna Z,

My food is not on the list either, you mean you can actuallu open a claim with the company, even if they do not come forward. BTW what did you mean by what we are allowed to say on here anymore??????????????? I will say it mine was a PURINA product………………..All you have to say is was yours the same yes or no………………I will scream it from the roof tops if they wanna come after me. I have the vet bills the 2 sick cats and the 20 other poison cans to prove it.

Is there a reason we cant say what our pets were eating when they became sick or a reason we cant say our pets are well while eating another type?

  4. Lorie says:

    Martin,

Did I miss something, since when cannot we not name brands???????????? I never read that rule. Is it new.

A company can poison our pets and lie about it but we can’t call themout about it. THe company I am talking aobut all ready knows my claim I told them 3 times on the phone even have a so called case number. The FDA knows my story also. Not like it is a secret

I was responding to Donna Z’s comment about

“Not sure what we are allowed to say on here anymore. However, I did open a claim with the company that made the food I switched to when he got so sick. Even though it was not on recall list”.

What is it? Can we not say? Is there a rule? I want to know what the food is. Can you tell us Donna? If not, please tell us why?

  6. Donna Z says:

    Lorie,

Sorry for the confusion, I read something yesterday about being careful about what we said about companies. So I was just doing that. However, I will go ahead and name the company. It was Natural Balance. I had sent them an email on 4/24. Never heard anything back, it was more or less an informative email, in case other pet owners had same experience with flavor that was not recalled. Called them yesterday and asked if they have had any problems with certain flavor, was told No. I said well that is funny, since I did send you an email on the 24th. We spoke for awhile, and I was asked if I wanted to file a claim. I said yes, and was given another rep, and he took my claim. He asked if they could contact my Vet and get cat’s records. I said yes. I am now in the process of working with Petco to get copies of what I purchased and returned, as I don’t have receipts, and took all the NB food back.

Thanks for the post Donna Z.

Anyone know why we should be careful about what we say on this blog regarding the illness of our pet getting sick from a certain food? Why? You would think the companies would want to know if something was wrong. We sure do!!! We need to know!!

  8. Donna Z says:

This is what I read yesterday….should have read it a couple times…sorry.

Do report what you find, but be accurate and fair.

We should let you know that if you are claiming something negative about a product (IE: Product X contains poisons, or uses roadkill) please make sure that you state either “I believe” or provide evidence of the claim. Your opinions are totally fine as long as you don’t claim something not true as a fact. As you may know, many pet food companies visit this site and we would hate for you or us to be sued by what’s posted here. We hate having to remove anyone’s posts. We also don’t want to cause unsubstantiated panic.

Itchmo or any of our admins will not be responsible for unsubstantiated comments.

    Thank you!

    Katie…

I read your post regarding the condition of your pet’s teeth improving since you’ve switched to home-cooked.

I also have been home-cooking (for over a month now)…and have also noticed an improvement in my 2 dog’s teeth! They get the raw apples and carrots as well….but I find that the raw meaty bones (either veal or beef) has done wonders in cleaning their teeth!

I was feeding my dogs PURINA also….and I’m so glad I stopped them as they were vomitting undigested food way too often…and this was BEFORE the recalls! When the recalls were announced (even though the food I was feeding was not on the recall list)….I made the decision to home-cook and after much research as well as the assistance of my vet (who has been so supportive!)……I will never regret my decision!

My dogs are healthy (thank God!)…and super happy!

My eternal thanks to this web-site and to all those who have shared info and stories…..my best wishes to you all and your fur-babies!

Perhaps this is what folks here are referring to.

    Donna Z,

Thanks for posting the ITCHMO warning I missed that. I feel I have proof with 2 sick cats, vet bills, 20 leftover cans, and a spread sheet with about 10 other people using the same plant number of the product with a sick or dead pet. I respect this site though and am grateful for all they do so I will try to avoid bring any problems to this great info sharing environment.
Sorry ITCHMO if I have been using a brand name too much it is just so frustrating to know what happened to me is still happening to others because people are on the honor system and choose not to be honest.

    Hi Martin….

Well…..I have a few (for variety!!) that I took to my Vet…who also home-cooks (well actually his wife does the preparing!)…anyways…he said they were great….and gave me some copies of some recipes that he uses (for balancing the ingredients properly).

I’m making a batch of food today…so I’ll just tell you what this recipe will consist of.

Brown rice….ground lamb, ground beef (lean)….shredded carrots, broccoli.

Plus twice weekly I make a slurry of raw beef liver and veggies, pulverized egg shells (which are baked on low heat for an hour first) and salmon (I’m just using canned salmon right now)…….they love it and thank God (knocks on wood)…their stools have been fine and no vomitting!

They also get raw meaty bones (usually veal or beef)….every couple of days….and they eat raw carrot pieces and apple slices for treats as well as the “cookies” that I make (really simple!)

They were at the Vet last weekend and they were just fine….and they DO have more energy!!!…..

My recipe may not be “perfect”….and believe me, I keep on doing research. But my vet says it’s fine….and I’ve always trusted him (how he feeds his dogs speaks volumes to me!)…..and I just know they are better off with this diet than what they were being fed before…..if I only knew then…what I know now, I would have done this a long time ago!!

    Hope I’ve been helpful!!!

    Deanna

    Martin….

Btw…..I forgot to add that I certainly don’t cook EVERY day for my dogs!! For instance…the batch I’m making today will easily last 2 weeks! I potion them out into small freezer bags…and then put those all in large freezer bags that are marked and dated as sometimes I get a good sale at the butcher….and will make up a second batch and end up with 2 kinds of dogfood in my freezer..so, labeling and dating is something I find helpful!

Btw….I also make the liver slurry and portion it too and just pull it out the night before they get it! My Shelties which are medium size….get approx. 1 cup of the slurry…twice a week.

It’s really not difficult….and when you get it down to a fine art…..it’s actually quite easy and the dogs love it!!

If I’m not up by a certain time to give them “their” breakfast….well….I’ve got dogs scratching at the covers, pawing me non-stop….and if that doesn’t work….they both stand on top of me!!! It’s actually pretty funny…it’s also something…that they NEVER did before!!
