Wysong finally has a new recall page up. It's pretty long but, in a nutshell, says: (1) Chinese are BAD; (2) Wysong is GREAT; (3) the jury's still out on Menu Foods; and (4) this wouldn't have been a problem if everyone had just followed Dr. Wysong's feeding advice.

Here's the main part about Menu Foods:

"If some of the claims regarding Menu’s behavior in this matter are true—that they knew of danger long before alerting the public, that an official cashed out stock before the public was alerted, that they killed animals in feeding tests, etc.—that would be unconscionable. We have written to them and asked that they directly respond to these charges and will post them when we hear back. On the other hand we do not feel it appropriate to judge anyone without gathering all the facts and giving them a fair hearing. If they and other companies have been defrauded by their Chinese suppliers, then that is another matter."

I just sent them another email with this comment:

Even if Menu Foods was defrauded by its Chinese suppliers, this is irrelevant to whether "they knew of danger long before alerting the public, that an official cashed out stock before the public was alerted, that they killed animals in feeding tests, etc."

If it is confirmed -- or seems reasonably likely based on the evidence -- that Menu Foods engaged in any of this "unconscionable" conduct, I certainly expect Wysong to terminate any business relationship with the company.

Well, Wysong has heard that people are disgusted by their defense of Menu Foods, although it remains to be seen whether they really "get it" . Yesterday I sent them an email complaining about the fact that their recall page was "under construction" and asking for a clear statement as to whether they use any Chinese ingredients. (At the time I sent the message I hadn't yet seen their Menu Foods rant.) This morning I received this response:

"We have only temporarily removed the statement from the website because we have found it necessary to update it with new information (as new developments arise in the recall) as well as to adjust the tone of the statement as some people have found it to be offensive. It will be back up and available for your reading this afternoon. To reassure you, I will tell you that we do not source anything from China; the vast majority of our ingredients are grown/raised domestically and sourced by U.S. suppliers. Again, no Wysong products, including the supplements are affected by contaminated ingredients and are part of no recalls."

My original message to Wysong, and the reply I just sent them which addresses their Menu Foods defense, is posted under the new thread on this specific issue, at:

Oh shucks let’s not be to hard on China, Just remember most of all those little American flags seen in wonderful home town USA parades are made in China!
I feel the government and politicians have lost sight and minds as a collective power. “Show me the Money” is what it’s catalyst is now!

But hey, KFC is now trans fat free! Don’t mind the melamine!

Chris,
I sent this to the Washington Wine Commission and will look to contact some of the big wineries, too. At least it will get the facts about the pet recall into another venue.
-------------------------
"I am concerned after reading that the FDA has approved the use of wheat gluten and pea protein for use as fining agents in wine:
Agency Response Letter
GRAS Notice No. GRN 000182 6/27/2006
Do you know if WA wineries will be testing the gluten and protein powder for the presence of melamine and related compounds such as cyanuric acid? I don't want to be exposed to any risk of kidney trouble from these compounds. (Estimates are that up to 40,000 pets have been made ill or have died from these toxins' presence in food grade glutens and plants proteins.)
Thanks!"

Well, Sharon, like I said I have observed that the people that have seen the darker picture so far have been proven right. Your husband and mother are no fools. I'm angry about what has happened to so many pets and their owners and I am totally creeped out about our food supply. My little terrier has grain allergies so is as fine as an elderly canine cancer survivor can be, (for now). I feel like I should do what I can to help prevent a disaster like this from happening again. (Even if it is not over yet.)

Why do you all believe them if they say their products are US based?? My next question would be . . . “But how do I know YOUR suppliers didn’t get it from China?” Get it???

What's appalling about this is that every American company involved will point their finger at their supplier and then to China. Why is the US importer not required to test the food (or "non-food" whatever that means) that comes into the country? The Chinese don't really have the best record in safety enforcement.

The owners of ChemNutra should be brought up on charges for importing a foodstuff that's been known to be spiked with this poison. If this was an "open secret" in China then why didn't ChemNutra, with their "expertise" in the Chinese marketplace know this?

sylvia,
my husband and mother both believe it was a deliberate act of sabotage. And they haven't budged from this stance despite the information coming out every day.

petslave,
I tried my cats (2 ACF, one not) on Prairie wet starting last night and they are eating it with a gusto unlike anything I've seen in 2 years. My ACF girls regularly get Hi-Tor and so does my boy cat but I want to give them something different every once it awhile. My girls are extremely finicky and I've tried two types now: beef and chicken/turkey.

They wouldn't eat: Natural Balance, Spot's Stew, Innova, Wellness, Chicken Soup, and Waltham coatcare.

It's amazing to think they have all gotten to the point now where they are picking up weight, coats are glossy, sweetness is back, more alert, and they are just happier. I was so afraid 3 weeks ago that they would still have not made progress - I cried every time I looked at them.

Sharon,
I get what you are saying and I hope not, but I was reluctant to consider that the melamine tainting was deliberate in the first place. I know for sure that we need to clean up our criminally run global free-for-all trade system and the mess in our own backyard with corporate lobbying. Also, I read that food adulteration is only a misdemeanor here in the U.S. That seems crazy if that is true, since they slapped Martha Stuart with a felony and jail time for insider trading. At least she wasn't making melamine/cyanuric acid stew and feeding it to dogs and cats!

lacy & jules--regarding what I'm feeding my cats. Between the last batch of NB venison/pea & home feeding, I went back to Innova Evo. I switched everyone to grainless & high protein last year because of research I did for my diabetic cat. So for a year I've been rotating between Evo, NV Raw Instinct & NB venison/pea. Maybe about 5 bags of the NB last year & the one earlier this year--mine never liked it much so I mostly used the other 2. I was also feeding them Wellness canned grainless up until 3 weeks ago.

When the NB recall came out, I started home cooking. I had almost bought a bag the day before the recall. I thought it was really lucky I didn't buy it but after today, it probably didn't matter. The vet found out my 7 lb girl kitty is in renal failure, probably chronic as I guess the numbers aren't as high as in acute. So it's probably been going on some time.

I'll start giving her subq fluids at home tomorrow if she's doing OK in the morning. So was it the NB, the Wellness canned, the chicken I've been feeding all week---what? She's only 7 & has always been healthy so it's hard to believe it's age related.

My other cat seems to be having diarrhea problems as well as having vomited some last night (big hairball involved so I didn't think much of it). Her sodium levels & creatine are a bit high but BUN is OK. So hope that's all just a reaction to overeating & the new mix of food.

I bought Felidae canned for everyone tonight as I don't know what to think about home feeding right now. There is chicken in the Felidae canned, but 3 other meats & they're getting their vitamins/minerals. I don't know where to go from here, guess I need a day to recover & get my wits back.

I’ll start giving her subq fluids at home tomorrow if she’s doing OK in the morning. So was it the NB, the Wellness canned, the chicken I’ve been feeding all week—what? She’s only 7 & has always been healthy so it’s hard to believe it’s age related.

My other cat seems to be having diarrhea problems as well as having vomited some last night (big hairball involved so I didn’t think much of it). Her sodium levels & creatine are a bit high but BUN is OK. So hope that’s all just a reaction to overeating & the new mix of food.

I bought Felidae canned for everyone tonight as I don’t know what to think about home feeding right now. There is chicken in the Felidae canned, but 3 other meats & they’re getting their vitamins/minerals. I don’t know where to go from here, guess I need a day to recover & get my wits back.

THANK YOU Kiki and Sylvia!

It's good to know that some ... feel the same way I do!!! I was starting to worry! I read all these posts with so many people trusting that their products' ingredients ALL come from the U.S.A.

BUT, BUT, BUT, do we know whether THEIR products come from CHINA originally? That's my biggest fear!!!

Thanks for the reply.
