68 days & counting……will this ever end? *slaps forehead with left hand, takes shot of tequila with right hand*

  2. Helen says:

Maybe the intent is to keep us so confused about what is or isn’t safe that we will just go back to buying whatever crap is on the shelf. Maybe we will forget all about the vet bills and the corpses of our loved ones and just submit to big corporate daddy telling us what we and our pets will eat. Maybe they are hoping we will just give up trying to feed ourselves and our pets safely. Maybe they are trying to distract us. Maybe the Friday night recalls are the new OJ trial. Maybe they can all kiss my cat’s hairy butt (she would be more than happy to show it to them).

“Maybe they can all kiss my cat’s hairy butt (she would be more than happy to show it to them).”

Think again–who knows what sort of contageous diseases the kissers may have ;-).

  4. elliott says:

JanC - GREAT!! We can drink here, too!

  5. Mandy says:

I can’t drink, too many medications that I have to take. Though I have been gorging on ice cream lately. One of my comfort foods. Since I can’t drink, I guess I’ll just get fat. xp

  6. JanC says:

*pass Ben & Jerrys to Mandy….only have cherry garcia*

*pass third bottle of tequila to elliott, no limes today, used them all early am*

    *slap forehead once more*

  7. Debbie4747 says:

Best of both worlds by Olive Garden…their Frozen Tiramisu (or should we call it a Frozen Melamisu?)….ice-cream, kahlua and ameretto.
Of course just kahlua on the rocks is good too…head may still explode but it softens the blow.

  8. JanC says:

    Debby4747:

Love that Kahlua with melamilk….also melaJello shots are good. At least the alcohol might kill off some of the melamine & other contaminants. Also good to calm down those nerves with each new recall……..of which there are way too many.

  9. Helen says:

menusux: Thanks, I will remember to disinfect her butt after. :)

I will have the kalua with vodka and organicdioxincream and PCBleadIce please.

  10. Debbie4747 says:

JanC…never had the melaJello shots but they do sound good. I do wonder though what our boys at the FDA are drinking…must be some good stuff.
I know they like testing the little blue pills, especially now that they’ve just approved that new contraceptive pill. Gee, where was that pill (or those pills) when I coulda used it, LOL?

  11. furmom says:

So am I missing something, I can’t find on Nutra nuggets website or Diamond’s where this recall information is. Of course I wouldn’t expect the Fda to be up to date till, say Friday? I’ve got a bag of possibly MelaNuggets if Diamond wants to test it, I’ll gladly send it to them. or should I just buy some rats and feed it to them first to see if it’s okay for my dog?

ITCHMO ADMIN: When we spoke to the Nutra Nuggets vet on the recall line yesterday, he said that they were recalling Nutra Nuggets Lamb Meal and Rice Formula and said that if we had the recalled product, we should stop feeding it and return it to the store. When I asked him why the message on the Nutra Nuggets phone line was still saying that no dry dog foods were being recalled, he said that the message hadn’t been updated.

  12. Helen says:

furmom, use the links at www.thepetfoodlist.com
They are working, but the web sites are a little screwed up.

  13. Helen says:

furmom, keep a sample of the food in a dark airtight container just in case.

  14. sez who says:

Today I called a major infant formula company.. All I wanted to know was if ANY of their ingredients were imported from China. The spokesperson already had her speech ready. There is no melamine in our product, ( I didn’t even bring that up. ) I told her that is not my question. What I wanted to know was if ANY ingredient listed on their product was imported from China, any of them. She said she did not have that information, could not comment and started back in on her melamine speech. I told her well, that just tells me that you do. If you didn’t…. your ceo would have that as top information for consumer calling.. Because right now ANY company that did not source one ingredient from China would be screaming it to high heaven and waving flags declaring themselves China free. I then told her that it was not her fault that she was doing her job, but to do some research on things for herself and family. I guess my point is this.. While I struggle over grief on one dead feline and another is on medication for CRF…. I’ve learned alot… This is not just about pet food anymore.. We MUST pressure the top human food manufacturers too with phone calls . Cause they need to get the message also . WE do not want imported ingredients from China in anything for human and animal!!! = we’ve seen the 80% mark of vitamins, sorbic acid and such coming from there.. Obviously many are calling the 1-800 numbers on our packaged human foods and inquiring about the China connection.. I assume this as her speech was so ready.. Go to your cabinet and call one of those numbers and ask, “any ingredient listed imported from China”?… see what you get..

  15. Mandy says:

By not saying they don’t buy anything from China, they are pretty much admitting they DO buy some ingredients from China.

I’ve noticed that these companies are wording things VERY carefully. They’ll say, we don’t buy these specific ingredients from China, but don’t tell us where the rest of the ingredients are from, to try to trick us into believing that NONE of their ingredients are from China.

We don’t buy this from China! What about the rest of your ingredients? Their answer? Silence or evasion.

I wish that people would just tell the truth, but I don’t think they will at this point. They KNOW people don’t want China ingredients, so they do their best to not have to admit it because they know that as soon as they do, the word will get out and people will stop buying their products.

But noooo they don’t want to simply stop buying China ingredients because it’s CHEAP.

So is the new way of the mighty USM. (The United States of Money.)

  16. Debbie4747 says:

I was just reading in the New Jersey Star Ledger, that a group of devoted fans of the TV show Jericho are sending hores of peanuts to CBS for cancelling the show. Seems the last word in the show as someone is handing over the town to some mauraders was “nuts.” So for a couple of tons has been sent. According to the paper CBS is still leaving the show as cancelled.
Someone mentioned something about sending the recalled pet food to the white house or someplace. Maybe that isn’t such a bad idea after all.
We do though still have to send those letters to whoever we can possibly think of and let manufacturers of foods know we don’t want Chinese imports in our foods. Keep up the badgering. Don’t forget that MADD started with just one mother who decided to fight the system and have something done.

  17. Amy says:

Hey! My Stefi had improved test results today! Her weight is up to 7.4 lbs from 7.1 (has always been a little cat) and her CRE dropped to 3.7 from 4.1. Celebratory mela-ritas for everyone!!

  18. J.T. says:

Sorry about being off topic, but Debbie4747’s post about JERICHO being cancelled really pisses me off. Anyone else who feels the same way as I do and would like to sign a petition to CBS can do so here: http://www.petitiononline.com/.....-sign.html

  19. 4lgdfriend says:

    Amy: Great news!
Helen: AHA! more clues on Nutro: http://www.geocities.com/jmpeerson/canfood.html “June 20, 2002. Warning on Nutro Products: Nutro has removed “as-fed” nutritional information from their web site and is refusing to give calorie contents. I have read rumors that they have moved to a “least-cost” method of determining their recipes, which involves constantly changing the ingredients, and I have personally noticed that Binky drinks more water after eating Nutro compared to other foods. I will attempt to update the information on this table when I can find it, but be advised that the Nutro values may not be accurate. UPDATE, April 2005: Still no luck getting reliable information from Nutro.”

  20. Debbie4747 says:

Amy, that’s such wonderful news. I hope she will continue to improve, and cheers!

  21. 4lgdfriend says:

I’ll just have two aspirin thank you.

  22. JanC says:

    Amy:

That’s great news. I’m so happy to hear some good news for a change.

*passes bottle of tequila to Amy*……sorry, no limes today.

  23. Helen says:

4lgdfriend: I’ll see your two aspirin and raise you two. Thanks for the Nutro info! *snarls & cursing at Nutro* NO MORE NUTRO. LIFETIME BOYCOTT.

Amy, Hurray for Stefi! What a little trouper. :)

  24. JanC says:

    4lgdfriend:

I don’t have a clue what any of that means but Mars bought them (I believe it was Mars, my brain is on tilt right now…..plus the tequila fog) so maybe they are making changes. Would feel better if they would test all their dry food……too many reports of sick pets on their product. I used it right before the recall but my doggie had the runs…..I’m so very thankful that’s all she had!!!!!

  25. JanC says:

Sorry, meant to include this in my last post…….I copied this from a post by Donna over at pet connection. I almost got sick after reading this one so I just had to share:

Speaking of FDA Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach – he did an “opposite view” editorial in USA Today regarding the issues with Avandia.

    Love this quote:

“The American public expects the FDA to be a strong, science-based agency that increases trust through open, clear communication — and acts based on a full understanding of as much scientific data as possible and not on snap or rash judgments. We strive to achieve the best for public health every day.”

THE BEST FOR PUBLIC HEALTH? EXACTLY WHOSE PUBLIC HEALTH ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? THE CITIZENS OF CHINA?

Doesn’t that make you feel all warm & cozy about them now? Gag****choke

  26. LorieVA says:

    J.T.
Thanks for the link I cannot believe they are cancelling one of the best shows on TV. Probably forced to cancel, to close to what could possibly happen. I am spreading the link around to all my JERICHO fans.

  27. Helen says:

FDA, translation: “We strive to achieve the deterioration of public health every day.”

  28. Cheryl W says:

A good question to ask companies might be, “Do any of your ingredients originate from China?” Then again even if they said No would we really want to believe them at this point? It seems funny that more & more foods have a cros contamination problem.

  29. Elena L says:

sez who says:”Because right now ANY company that did not source one ingredient from China would be screaming it to high heaven and waving flags declaring themselves China free.”
Exactly.Marketing Firms would be jumping on this claim, yet I know I haven’t seen a single major company making this statement.

  30. Helen says:

Companies that want to jump on that all USA claim may be afraid of the big monsters coming after them. It’s happened before.

  31. elliott says:

Awesome news, Amy! I have an idea, since you and I are spending so much time at the clinic, we should stash a bottle there. Never leave home without it. What actions did you take with Stefi to get better results?

  32. kellie says:

Funny little off topic kitty story to brighten your day.

Remember I said the two stray kitties in the hood have been getting my kitties rejected foods every evening? Well they are now thanking me in their way. when I went out to retreive the dish and refill it , next to it was a tiny bird egg and the remnants of a dead mouse.

I guess it’s their way to offer something to me in return..How cool is that? How can anyone not like cats? They wont let me pet them and run from me but still show their gratitude for all the quality meals they have been getting for the last week.

  33. Amy says:

LOL Elliott - I think Dr. Jones and her staff would be okay with us leaving a stash! All we’ve done is daily sub q’s and the Rx renal diet and her numbers dropped! We’re going to continue sub q’s for another week and focus on feeding ONLY the renal food (she sometimes likes a little baby food or ‘regular’ food to kickstart her appetite) and see if we can’t get her down around ‘normal’ because our good doctor thinks it is a possibility I guess. :) One interesting thing, she is speculating that Stef already had a congenital kidney issue and the bad food may have just sent her over the edge… but we’ll never know for sure… I still don’t trust that the NB did us any favors… we might do an additional test where they inject dye into her bloodstream to get a good view of her kidneys to have a better idea of what happened. But for now, I’m happy to have a healthier cat!

  34. Amy says:

Awww, Kellie, that’s a sweet story - thanks for sharing! Reminds me of the dead snake our cat brought into the kitchen for my mom when I was a kid. Mom HATED snakes… but she was the one who fed the cat!

Well, the News apparently changes: Repost from Forums - FYI.

I just got off the phone with the Vet for NutraNuggets (even though I use Chicken Soup).

A - they claim all products are from the US (including Wheat Flour).

    B. - There is NO RECALL YET (he was adamant). They have sent the food to an independent lab to try to figure out what the heck happened (I told him we were worried because report of Cross-Contamination with Natural Balance - so what about the other foods, and the Wash Out Procedures?)

    C. Somewhere - what he (The Vet? - he did call himself Dr. - not the same Vet as Chicken Soup - guess everyone gets their own Vet) says, is that the story got misconstrued. They actually don’t know what’s going on.

    D. They will post a message once they do (either tomorrow or the next day), and he said I can call him also (guess you all can too) - apparently, he is answering the phones until 7:00 pm Central time.

    E. Additional Tidbit - He claims, don’t believe everything in Media (not specifying which Media) - HHHHMMMM.

ITCHMO ADMIN: We just called Nutra Nuggets and spoke to the vet on the recall line and wanted to confirm the recall and she said that they got their results in from their testing and said they are recalling the product in question. They are recalling the 40 pound Nutra Nuggets Lamb Meal and Rice Dry Formula for dogs with the product code of #NLR0404B2SL with the Best Buy date of October 9, 2008. There is a recall notice on Nutra Nuggets website now.

  36. Karen V says:

  37. Amy says:

Hmmm… Natural Balance did a voluntary recall when they were “try(ing) to figure out what the heck happened”

I go with Itchmo. I wouldn’t touch Nutra and I think they’re being *VERY* irresponsible by not doing a voluntary recall.

    Itchmo for President!

  38. Karen V says:

Wow- you got a SHE - so whom is the HE?

  39. Karen V says:

Q: How do you know that the rice protein concentrate did not contaminate other foods?

A: We’ve had no complaints on any of our other foods.

So how about the testing you claim you were doing? How about the washout procedures - which seems to have disappeared from your site?

Something is not right. Waiting for animals to become sick is totally wrong.

  40. Helen says:

Amy, I second. Itchmo for President. Itchmo, do you have time to run the country?

CANADIAN GOVERNMENT IGNORES CALLS TO INVESTIGATE PET FOOD INDUSTRY

    ..snip..
Vancouver, May 23/07 - In response to the pet food crisis which has also spread to the human food supply,The Humane Society of Canada called upon the Canadian Government to create a taskforce to investigate the pet food industry following allegations that tens of thousands of pets have become ill or have died as a result of pet food companies, including Canadian based pet food manufacturer, Menu Foods, of Mississauga, Ontario. Five weeks later, the animal charity is still waiting for an answer to their letter found here written to Prime Minister Harper and other politicians.

Over five weeks ago, The Humane Society of Canada also made formal requests to the RCMP and other police forces; and the Ontario Securities Commission and other securities regulators asking them to conduct their own independent investigations to determine if criminal animal cruelty charges and securities charges should be laid.

Pet Owners Blame Nutro Products for their Dogs’ Illnesses

    ..snip..
A California pet owner is furious that Nutro Products continues to claim its dry dog foods are safe. That company’s senior dry food, she says, nearly killed her two dogs.
    ..snip..
“Juliet got sick first,” Cynthia says, adding she bought the Nutro Max dry food in April, but didn’t start feeding it to her dogs until May. “And she has been very ill for nearly three weeks. She’s had bloody diarrhea, repeated vomiting, and her system also started shutting down, resulting in a bad bladder infection. She has also been on two different types of medications.”

    Cynthia’s Pomeranian experienced similar problems.

“He has vomited and had severe diarrhea for more than a week. His system started to shut down, and he ended up with a serious skin infection. He’s still on antibiotics and is not yet well.”

Both dogs, she says, were also extremely lethargic.

“I was down at the vets office with both of them and I didn’t think they’d come back. They’ve been through hell.”

Is it possible that anything besides of the food made the dogs sick?

    No way, Cynthia says.

  43. Helen says:

Well, they couldn’t keep the cat in the bag forever could they?

  44. Mandy says:

Hey Amy glad your furry baby is doing better! That’s such great news. I hope the improvements continue.
