- Lamb Meal & Rice Formula Adult
- Lamb Meal & Rice Formula Senior

We are taking this proactive stance to voluntarily recall these products to avoid any confusion for our customers about which Royal Canin USA products are safe and which products may be affected.

Pet owners should consult with a veterinarian if they are concerned about the health of their pet. No other Royal Canin diets are affected by this recall and CONTINUE TO BE safe for pets to eat.

In addition, Royal Canin USA will no longer use any Chinese suppliers for any of our vegetable proteins.

This decision to recall some of our dry pet food products is driven by our philosophy that the “Pet Comes First”. The safety and nutritional quality of our pet food is Royal Canin USA’s top priority. Not Sensible Choice cat food (just dog food)?

Also- wonder if they tested the corn gluten in their food. Their website states all their other products are safe to eat…

  2. Joan Steik says:

    ROYAL CANIN
The brand’s producted are marketed in nearly 90 countries on every continent.

    http://www.royalcanin.com.au/

  3. Karen says:

Avoid products with Corn Gluten - its not good for the pet anyway (there is no protein - unless you marker it with melamine).

Remember - no Rice unless Whole Grain Brown/White, No Wheat (not sure of all the ingredients - Chicken Soup Does have a form of Barley), No Soy, And NO CORN.

  4. Laurie says:

Karen- I agree. This is opening so many people’s eyes to what is actually in the food. I previously had assumed because a brand of food was at a specialty pet store that it was good food. Sensible Choice is sold at those specialty stores.

Sadly, a lot of people wouldnt/couldnt have pets if they didnt buy the cheapest food. And I bet ALL of those (grocery brands) have corn.

  5. Diane says:

DO NOT give your pets any products that have “CORN GLUTEN” in them. I have been stating this fact since 04/02/07, when my Siamese Cat, Simon, was POISIONED TO DEATH by eating a SCIENCE HILL”S PRESCRIPTION DIET DRY & CANNED food that I purchased from a vet. The dry and canned version of PRESCRIPTION DIET FELINE i/d contains “CORN GLUTEN” and that is the only food that my SPECIAL LOVING KITTY consumed!!!! I am absolutely positive that the FELINE i/d killed my cat by POISIONING…I informed my vet, but was told that the product does not contain wheat gluten and I responded by stating that I am perfectly aware of that, BUT IT DOES CONTAIN “CORN GLUTEN” PLEASE, believe me : DO NOT FEED THIS PRESCRIPTION DIET TO YOUR CATS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. e wem says:

Someone we know lost his cat last year to sudden kidney failure. The cat ate only MaxCat roasted chicken dry. He loved his cat. Cost him $4000 in vet bills

  7. Karen says:

I’m on disability, I’m at the poverty level.

You’d be surprised at what one could do without in order to have healthier pets (since I can’t afford the $3000 to fix one cat - and have a sad life - much less three cats).

I thought I had been giving them healthy food (you know, the generic to the “premium”) Then I discovered its like rot in a box (and the “premium” turned out worse!!)

So I went from $12 a month to about $50. I didn’t plan on it, and on my budget, that’s big! However, I found I can manage fine. It saves on Vet Bills anyways, and my Siberia has had skin problems, stool problems and constant vomiting (about twice a week or more, I thought hairballs). He wasn’t tolerating the food.

Since switching to Chicken Soup for Cats and Holistic Canned (I’d quite canned since they were wasting it, or hacking it up) - ALL PROBLEMS CEASED!! I’ll never go back.

  8. Lynn says:

    ROYAL CANIN

Sounds like the broker Wilbur-Ellis contacted Royal Canin-USA and RC is doing this as a totally precautionary measure. Fine with me.

I have a gut feeling that we need to hold onto our hats - this is going to be the shape of things to come…..take a deep breath.

  9. Val says:

Well since American Nutrition received some of the bad rice protein I checked on my bag of Vita Bone- No rice at all and No Corn Gluten Meal listed on the bag. then ….
On the site it is listed as an ingredient!!!
Now we have to check sites and bags!
    Back to making cookies!

    Vita Bone-
Wheat Flour, Poultry Meal, Ground Wheat, Ground Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved with BHA), Fish Meal, Brewers Dried Yeast with Molasses and Yeast Extract, Salt, Calcium Carbonate…

    Vita Bone Flavors-
Wheat Flour, Poultry Meal, Ground Wheat, Meat and Bone Meal, Ground Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved with BHA), Fish Meal, Tomato Meal, Brewers Dried Yeast with Molasses and Yeast Extract, Salt, Peanut Meal, Dehy-drated Cheese, Liver and Gland-ular Meal, Caramel Color, Dehydrated Peas, Iron Oxides, Artificial Colors, Calcium Carbonate…

    Vita Bone Basted-
Wheat Flour, Poultry Meal, Ground Wheat, Ground Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved with BHA), Fish Meal, Brewers Dried Yeast with Molasses and Yeast Extract, Salt, Beef Flavor, Chicken Flavor, Caramel Color, Red #40, Calcium Carbonate…

  10. SabrinaD says:

Not all of the Sensible Choice line has been recalled. There is Natural Blend of that line that has not been recalled because it contains no glutens of any kind (just brown rice, brewers rice and oatmeal). Just some info for you. (It’s what my guys eat and we have had the same bag for proabably about a month now and all five Chihuahhas are fine).

  11. lydia says:

I am stil waiting to hear from Purina Foods about Fancy Feast. I had been feeding it for a long time. Right at the time of the recall he had a can of turkey with gravey - within 15 minutes became violently sick, and I had to have him put down due to lethargy, constant vomiting and dehydration, failing kidneys. It HAS WHEAT GLUTEN amongst other ingredients.

  12. Pam says:

I was afraid this was coming. My dogs used to eat Science Diet dry — until they got sick after I opened a new bag several weeks ago. Until I have proof, I’m assuming it was the corn gluten meal that caused the problem. I’m now feeding Nature’s Logic Chicken kibble (still mixed with homemade while we transition). The owner of that company has been extremely helpful and available to answer questions by e-mail, just using the one available on their website. I’m not pushing any kind of food, especially in these troubling times, but am relieved that I made the choice of a food with no glutens, protein powders, or synthetic vitamins and minerals. Also, according to the Pet Food List, they don’t source stuff from China. Best wishes to everyone as we all try to make sure our babies get safe food to eat.

  13. Pam says:

Wow! I just read the new article from the Sacramento Bee, linked thru Pet Connection. I rushed back to check the label, and am relieved to know that the Nature’s Logic doesn’t contain any of these, either: whey protein isolate, soy protein isolate, soy protein concentrate, soy grits and soy lecithin. At least it seems as though the scientists are finally getting somewhere with their investigations. But I would expect many more recalls coming.

  14. ann says:

Forthcoming? At least Natural balance recalled their stuff right away, while everyone else “waitied” for test results. I wonder who # 5 will be. I had a problem with Purina ProPlan dog and cat. My animals weren’t eating it, and they had been on it al their lives, so I switched to Innova.

  15. Vitaly says:

Who’s next you ask? Time to check with your local supermarket. Forget the pet food rows, proceed directly to the meat section….

  16. Terri says:

FDA should have suspected what was causing the problem with pet foods long before this. They knew about companies “boosting protein levels” and thus, pricing almost TWENTY years ago…in 1990…then, in HUMAN grains. If you have lost a pet, forward this one to your attorney…An eye-opener: http://findarticles.com/p/arti.....ai_9246932

SPIKED WHEAT - Schuler Grain Co. uses additive to artificially boost the protein content of its wheat
FDA Consumer, Dec, 1990 by Judy Folkenberg, Richard Nelson, Sharon Snider

    Spiked Wheat

A tip from a disgruntled former employee of a large Minnesota grain company led to court-ordered heavy fines and probation for the owners last February.

Schuler Grain Co. in Breckenridge, Minn., was using an additive to artificially boost the protein content of its wheat and thereby increases the price it brought on the market. Ultimately, the Schulers’ profit came out of the consumer’s pocket–for higher-priced baked goods at the grocery store.

In August 1985, the tipster told the U.S. Department of Agriculture about the firm’s illegal activities. USDA in turn notified FDA.

Investigation by FDA’s Minneapolis district office confirmed that urea, a chemical used primarily in fertilizer and feed for cattle, was being illegally added to the wheat before being sold to flour companies.

Last February, George M. and Robert V. Schuler, owners of Schuler Grain Co., pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota to three counts of selling adulterated wheat in 1985.

  17. Rosanna says:

I have already started a diet of human food for my babies! Call your vet or go to the library and READ about human food for your pet-find the correct balance and do it. My vet said the dogs must have a starch, veg, and protein. He is loving it and it is cheaper than my Royal Canin dog food!!!

  18. teric says:

RC says all other products are safe.

    Yeah Right! Until next week.

  19. 5CatMom says:

If you feed treats, please be aware that much of that stuff is manufactured in China and India.

Ask the same questions as you would with pet food: Where was it manufactured, where was it tested, by whom, what were test findings.

I found the websites last night, but failed to save them. Very sorry. Maybe someone can dig them up.

  20. Sue J says:

That link to the Pittsburg Tribune Review had a TON of new info in it! FOr anyone that remembers people who’s animals had sky high potassium levels, this explains it - amiloride was found along with 2 other chemicals. Amiloride can be used as a diuretic (makes you urinate out more fluid - commonly known as ‘water pills’). It is potassium ’sparing’ meaning if you take too much amiloride, your potassium levels go too high - see here:
    http://www.medicinenet.com/ami.....rticle.htm
They also found cyanuric acid - from the MSDS :

Special Remarks on other Toxic Effects on Humans:

    Chronic Potential Health Effects:
Ingestion: Prolonged or repeated ingestion may affect the kidneys, metabolism (anorexia/weight loss).

Itchmo, the entire article should get a banner, I think this “triple cocktail” is what we’ve been waiting to hear about.

  21. Sue J says:

sorry - the link is in an earlier post by Vitaly, here it is again:

  22. Carol A. says:

My beautiful female Siamese Mari got terribly sick with FD from MediCal formulations. MediCal (called Select-Care in the US) is owned by Royal Canin.

She almost died at the hands of the incompetent vets, none of whom told me to take her off the POISONOUS DRY VET PRESCRIPTION FORMULA KIBBLE.

She had eaten Preventative, (got fat on that from the carbs and poison in it); Reducing, Weight Control and then Mature Formulas. This was last May, 2006 so this corn gluten crap has been happening for a lot longer than just this recall period.

The pet food industry has a lot of dirty dark secrets and now they are all coming out. They are perpetuating a massive consumer fraud on the uneducated public with their labelling and claims of “health”. These companies lilke Royal Canin have done no long term studies to prove that cats DON’T get sick on their products.

. It’s just because now we have these blogs like Itchmo, Howl911 and YDC we can all communicate to each other rather than being silent little stories in our vet’s offices!

The Vets do not look to food, generally, as a cause of all these illnesses show up in cats. IBD, CRF, Feline Diabetes — ALL caused by dry cat food!

Dry cat food is poison. Period. No cat should eat any form of dry food and now we are finding most of the wet formulations are also garbage.

I feed my cat RAW MEAT. www.catnutrition.org recipe.

Citizens, learn all you can about feeding your pets properly so you DON’T get big vet bills or lose your kitty!

Any info on Dingo Dental and regular chew bones. My sweetie loves them, but are made in China. He will be crushed! There’s not much listed as ingredients but this has got me paranoid. I just lost a dog to renal two years ago and it was a nightmare. How many are going homemade?

  24. Valerie says:

I still cannot believe that we pay a premium price to feed our babies and
the companies are purchasing cheap food from China. I was feeding my cats Purina and my dog Ultra Nutro when this all started I changed my Newfoundland to Canidae Dry and Merrick Wet and the cats are now
on Core Wellness which is grain free and Merrick Wet. Everyday I go
on line to check who is going to be recalled next. I just E-Mailed Wellness because on their sight they said that they do not use the Rice Gluten that was tainted but they did not say where they get their products. I am sick and tired of hearing how the companies will re-imburse you for the product and vet bills - who cares I want my pet to be able to eat what
I (the one they trust) feeds them. Who cares about the money if your
pet is suffering. Merrick seems to be a good company they only make
their food, they are family owned and you won’t believe the selections,
it is like something we could eat. They do not make dry cat food yet but
I will buy there’s when they do. The cats love their we food and I called
them and they are all USA made and in Texas. I really feel bad about
all the people who lost their pets because of companies buying cheap
products to raise their profit margins.

  25. Kim says:

I also feed my dogs the Merrick dry food. Am feeding the cats Pets Promise, which is made in the US by Dr. Weil. I think I am going to make a batch of the raw cat food listed above, as kitties are crying for their wet food.
Thanks everyone for comments and thoughts.
    Kim

  26. Donna says:

I was just looking at the raw food recipe. Not where I really want to go…but another option. As long as the human food chain stays safe, that is.

  27. Debbie says:

I have been feeding my 4 pound Chihuahua (2/12 years old) Royal Canin Chihuahua 28 dry dog food during a 1 1/12 year interval along with human food. His checkup on March 3 revealed high liver enzyme levels. On a scale of 10-100, his ALT was 298, tripled. I was told by my vet (Banfield) that something was poisoning him and I should stop giving him whatever holistic products I told him about (Goji juice and a dental cleaner called PetzLife Oral Care Gel–100% natural). He wanted me to also check around the house for any other problems too. He said he would check his blood again in 3 months to see if it has changed. In the meantime I started him on Milk Thistle therapy. I plan to have his blood checked again in a week or two tho. Now, with this food recall problem, I am sincerely wondering if this is what caused his liver enzymes to soar since I believe before kidney problems arise, liver enzymes rise. Of course I took him off the Royal Canin a couple of weeks ago when I heard that they had a previous recall last year with the vitamin D situation. I have been cooking for him mostly and offer a holistic dry dog food on the side(Life’s Abundance).

  28. Jo says:

I have discontinued the feeding of my Sensible Choice Dry Cat Food because of this recall! It may not list this formula specifically, but I believe ALL SENSIBLE CHOICE FORMULAS, CAT AND DOG, SHOULD BE SUSPECT!

  29. blkcatgal says:

Anyone have an opinion on Felidae food….chicken and rice canned and/or dry? I am thinking of switching my cats to this.

  30. Kathy Thompson says:

Looks like the article from the Pittsburg Tribune went away before I got to it.

  31. Barb Fannon says:

Anyone hear any negative feed back on CANIDAE DRY AND INNOVA DRY OR THEIR BISCUITS? the Innova bars has “RICE” in their ingredients. I have been feeding Canidae forever…my two shepherds of 9 years died a few months, the dog food I’m sure played a part in their health. My other three now I am worried about. Dogs should live longer than 9 friggin years. I am slowly switching to home made, including the buscuits. But, in the mean time I did take in my younger shepherd and she had elevated kidneys….geezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I do not trust ANY food.

    Barb
    Phx, Arizona

  32. Valerie says:

I also gave my cats Felidae and so far the company seems to be very good. Kona’s breeder recommended Canidae and felidae is there cat food.
I mix foods for the cats so they get different ones and I did feed them felidae. I do feed them the Felidae Wet and they do like it. They do not
use Wheat, Corn or Soy and they do not use any glutens. Visit there
website Canidae.com Our babies our so important and they trust us
    so much.

  33. Kathy Thompson says:

    Never mind–the second link works.
The more I read here and other blogs, the more I think there is no way humans are not being affected by this. I lost my mother 2 weeks ago , among other things she had acute renal failure and had been anorexic for 2 months. She was subsisting on Glucerna, nasty stuff.
I think we all should not eat anything our grandmothers could not have prepared, and do the best we can to feed our pets what she would have fed them. I lost a dog to Nutro last summer, so far everyone else seems to be fine on Kumpi. I don’t mind that it has corn in it, it is whole corn and not GMO. When I had goats, I fed them sweet mix, it was hard to keep the dogs out of it! And it didn’t hurt them at all.

  34. Chad says:

In other post it seems Canidae uses a small canning plant in Texas that is family owned. I don’t believe any of the tainted food (so far) has come from this plant. Based on the limited info we have Candiae seems OK.

I am going to use it as a back up food in case Solid Gold gets recalled.

  35. meg says:

Is Royal Canin SO dry food for cats okay? My cat had urinary stones and had been eating Hill’s Science dry cat food since he was a kitten. I had to spend $4500.00 for all the vet bills including an operation. The vet then switched him over to the Royal Canin SO which I can only get with a prescription from the vet. I am trying to keep my cat well and hate to think after all he has been through he is now going to get sick again.

  36. Sly says:

I’m still waiting to hear from Purina about Fancy Feast, too…we tried the Chicken SOup for the kitties and not one of the 8 would touch it! I know it’s supposed to be really good, but if they won’t eat it….they’ve been eating the Fancy Feast dry chicken food and Fancy Feast canned grilled chicken with gravy. And Iams Lamb & Rice dry food. Nobody will answer when you e-mail them, and you can’t get people on the phone!!! It’s so totally frustrating!!!! AND SAD!!!!

  37. Lorie says:

Diane & Lydia, I agree with the Hill RX food with corn gluten my littlest was on the C/D wet and dry and also eating as a treat Fancy Feast w/ Wheat gluten and soy Portien concentrate.Elegant Medley. She start having all the symptoms and 1300 dollars later she is under observation for Kidney damage. And all Purina can say is our food is notinvovled last girl i spoke to was very rude when I called back to have put in my case that Gsisha Creatitine had double in 3 weeks. I suggested if the food ws fine why don’t i send it to her for her to eat. I do not think Purina will ever tell the truth.

  38. Lorie says:

Here is the back door number to Fancy Feast Purina, 1-866-270-9304. Tried being nice and calm with them just wanted to give heads up product might be bad and they had to talk to me like i was crazy. let them have it.

    RC Canadian Recalls Now:

    http://www.royalcanin.ca/index_en.php

    April 20, 2007 Media Inquiries: (613) 292-9268

Royal Canin Canada Voluntarily Recalls Pet Food Products That May Contain Contaminated Rice Protein Concentrate

Guelph, Ontario — Following Royal Canin USA’s discovery of a melamine derivative in rice gluten in some of its dry pet food products and its decision to recall these products, Royal Canin Canada has decided to remove Sensible Choice Diet and certain veterinary prescribed specialty diet products from distribution.

The following Royal Canin Canada products are being recalled:

ROYAL CANIN VETERINARY DIET CANINE EARLY CARDIAC
ROYAL CANIN VETERINARY DIET CANINE SENSITIVITY RC
    (Rice and Catfish)
ROYAL CANIN VETERINARY DIET CANINE SKIN SUPPORT
ROYAL CANIN VETERINARY DIET FELINE HYPOALLERGENIC HP
ROYAL CANIN VETERINARY DIET FELINE SENSITIVITY RD
    (Rice and Duck)
In the interest of pet safety, Royal Canin Canada has taken the proactive measure to recall the products listed above.

“We cannot express how devastated we are to notify pet owners of this finding,” said Xavier Unkovic, CEO Royal Canin Canada. “However, we feel that this recall is necessary as we absolutely cannot put pets at risk.”

Based on today’s announcement, pet owners should immediately stop feeding their pets the Royal Canin Canada pet food products listed in this statement. Pet owners should consult with a veterinarian if they are concerned about the health of their pet. No other Royal Canin Canada diets are affected by this recall and CONTINUE TO BE safe for pets to eat.

Along with the recall announcement, Royal Canin Canada will no longer use any Chinese suppliers for any of its vegetable proteins.

Pet owners who have questions about this recall and other Royal Canin Canada products should call 1-866-494-6844.

My dogs are not happy about Canidae. I have to put chicken or beef in their food in order for them to eat it. Are they trying to tell me something? Any more info on Canidae is greatly appreciated. Hmmm..small plant in Texas? I’m not buying anything at this point.

  41. Rory says:

For those of you feeding Evo - do you think feeding 1/4 cup a day to two one year old kitties is okay? I am at my wits end right now (as I’m sure everyone on this site is!!) but I want to find something with quality ingredients (grain free, etc) but I am worried about the protein content (and cals are really high). I was feeding NB. Then tried Wellness (my one kitty who barely eats wet food wouldn’t touch it) and then Organix but then returned it as neither liked it AND they wrote this reply when my friend asked if they used “US ingredients”:

I truly understand your concerns. Wherever possible we source our
ingredients domestically but not all are available here in the US. For
example, the vitamin K used in our cat formula comes from Denmark.
However, please keep in mind that being sourced or produced domestically
does not necessarily provide a safer product. We just went through the
very large spinach recall that came on the heels of the peanut butter
recall; these were all US products.

Which really turns me off because when that spinach and pb was recalled, you can bet those companies were held responsible and the FDA and other agencies investigated their production sites. I don’t think we’ll have such luck in China. And, I have more faith in Denmark’s food control over China’s. Poorly said, Organix - bad comment indeed.

  42. lacy says:

    Barb Fannon
Im confused on your post. What was your 9 year old dog eating? I am also very very sorry for your loss.

  43. Deanna says:

Correct me if I’m wrong…..but isn’t China going to host the Olympics? I’m not sure which year but….if this is the case and I’m sure that China will be looking forward to a substantial financial gain from this!

I just finished reading the Pittsburgh Trib. article and it disgusts me to read that officials in China are actually hanging up the phones and telling people not to call back again!

This speaks volumes to me….that they indeed have something to hide and are purposely slowing down investigations by the FDA! Because this is a growing HEALTH concern…they should be more than willing to clear themselves of any wrong doings….if, and I stress IF, all is well from their end!

Because it HAS become a GLOBAL HEALTH concern….pressure should be put on the W.H.O. and the U.N. to deny China the PRIVILEGE of hosting an event when they have no respect for the countries that will be going there! I wish I knew how to go about starting a campaign like that!!……Any one out there with the contacts and savvy to do this……..please….do it!

We cannot allow a country with whom who’s officials have zero respect for the health situations for countries with whom they do business….do NOT deserve to host such a prestigious (and financially lucrative!) event!! Maybe this will get their attention about how serious people are! I doubt very much that they’ll be hanging up the phone on the U.N. or the W.H.O.!!

    What do you all think?

My older dogs ate Canidae since they were 9 weeks old. Of course being germand shepherds, they had health issues going on. I believe the food contributed to all their problems. :o(
Any info on Innova health bars???

    Thanks!

  46. Sharon says:

I have an 8 month old puppy who has been eating Royal Canin Puppy for large breeds since I got her at 2 months old. I am feeding her chicken & rice & cottage cheese now. I am scared to buy the prepared foods. I’ve been told by the Vets that she shouldn’t be on this diet for long term. Does anyone have any experience with feeding “people food” to dogs long term?

  47. Joanne says:

I want to alert everyone to Hill’s Prescription Feline Z/D Low Allergen Dry Cat Food. My cat Sapphire passed away March 24th from complete renal failure, she was eating Hills Z/D.

Sapphier was a pure-bred Ragdoll of 2 1/2 years of age and given a perfect bill of health in her annual check-up of January 2007. Sapphire started to eat that bag of Hill’s Z/D the last week of Febuary 2007. Sapphire died 3 weeks later of complete renal failure.

I have spoken with the FDA 4 times. Yesterday they phoned and emailed me asking me to keep the bag of Z/D so they can do tests on Sapphire’s food. I was told by the FDA what questions to ask Hill’s/Colgate who I have called already 7 times!

I did phone Wednesday Hill’s/Colgate investigations and spoke with Michelle. She refused to give the country of origin of where Hills gets their rice from. Michelle said this was competitive and confidential information. I replied “What do you think my cat is going to go around and give this information out, my cat is dead - you already killed my cat!”

I asked Michelle from Hill’s Colgate to provide me with the batch investigation of Sapphire’s food and prove to me there was no melamine in it? She refused again. I said to her “The Hill’s website states you have no melamine in your rice, if you do not have melamine in your rice, what is the problem of providing me the reports?” Michelle said “I cannot do this at this time.” I asked “Why?” Michelle of Hill’s Colgate responded with “Because there is an on-going investigation!”

That is totally contrary to what is on Hill’s website. I said to Michelle “Your website states you have already investigated your rice products and you have no melamine and now you tell me there is still an ongoing investigation - so your website is not telling the truth then?” Michelle responded with “We have an ongoing investigation and someone from Hill’s will call you back, thank you for call”

I gave this above informtion to the FDA investigator who called me yesterday. Considering it was the FDA who said I the right to have this information from Hills and this I did say to Michelle of Hill’s Colgate, she refused even what the FDA said I had the right to have!

Please I already have other people who have emailed me and their cats died from renal failure in January and February 2007 from eating Hill’s Z/D, please call the FDA and report immediately. Please post here on the Itchmo Blog! Please report the death of your cat at petconnect.com

Please stop these corrupt corporate giants from killing our pets!

    Thank you,
    Joanne and Always *Sapphire*

  48. Lorie says:

Joanne if corn gluten gets confirmed tainted here in the US i will be calling Hills also. My littlest of the cat Geisha the sicker on at the moemnt was eating in addition to FF w/ gravy which I know is bad because it is the only food both cats have in common. Topaz will not Geisha Hills C/D so I believe that is why Geisha is the sicker of the 2 cats double dose of poison well tripple cause she was eating C/D wet and dry plus FF. I have read on other blog site people claiming C/D killed there cat all same symptoms be interesting to see how this plays out.

  49. Lorie says:

sorry meant to say Topaz will have nothing to due with the C/D ate once a year ago and it made her vomit hasn’t touched it since.

  50. Courtney says:

My cats are on Royal Canin prescription canned calorie control high fiber. They have been on this food for 4 weeks since we switched them off IAMS at the first recall. So far, they have eaten this food without incident. After consultation with my vet today, we decided to keep them on it as one of my cats has cardio issues (unrelated to the current recall). We are, of course, continuing to monitor the list.

I did call the RC 800 line today and was assured that the calorie control high fiber canned DOES NOT contain rice protein concentrate. It also contains no wheat gluten or corn gluten.

I am nervous about keeping them on this food but given the one cat’s cardio issues, I need to continue to feed an acceptable food. If we did switch now, I don’t know what I would switch to. Still, I’m nervous and scared and praying for all our furry friends.

  51. Terry says:

We feed our Chow Chow Royal Canin Veterinary Diet 302030 Duck and Potato Dry….so far not affected, but now I am really concerned. They said check the expiration date because ALL PRODUCTS WITH AN EXPIRATION DATE OF APRIL 19TH, 2008 ARE MADE WITHOUT CHINESE SOURCED VEGETABLE PROTEINS AND ARE SAFE. But the expiration date is blurred….I’m calling…!!!

Ugh, this is HORRIBLE! Someone had better do something about this.

  52. Joanne says:

    Hi Lorie and Everyone,

Because of all this happening I have learnt more about cat nutrition than I ever knew before. Cats should not have any grains of any sort. It is all stuff made up by these huge companies to have us buy things which in turn will cause more health problems for our cats like diabetes for example.

Cat should not be even on dry food. They should have a diet which is complete top quality meat, either canned or raw food diet.

This all came as a real surprise for me, because since I was a little girl we must have had at least 30 cats or more, kittens running around all the time. But my Mom use to make the cats homemade cat food. Obviously my Mom was on to “nutrition” way before I had to learn the hard way.

There are good wet premium all meat cat foods and excellent raw food available for cats. Cats are not to have any grains in any form in their diets.

Cats would not even eat dry food it it was not for the spray manufacturers of pet food put on it to make it appealing to cats. They then become carb and dry food junkies and on to cause all sorts of harm to their health.

What these pet food companies have done is absolutely revolting. They need to be held accountable for their actions.
    Regards,
    Joanne

  53. blkcatgal says:

Terry, who told you about the expiration dates? Right now I am feeding my cats the RC IVD limited ingredients venison and peas (after NB recalled theirs). Supposedly it does not have wheat or rice protein but does have pea protein. I think I’m going to stop feeding them this too now. I am so darn paranoid! I don’t know what to do!

  54. Barb says:

If you are going to feed your pet “people” food you should supplement this diet with a product called “Missing Link”. This is a great product. It is made for people, birds, cats, dogs and horses. I fed my poodle chicken and rice all her life with “Missing Link” and she was 17 years old when I had to put her to sleep. They sell “Missing LInk Plus for dogs over 7 years old. It contains glucosamine and chondroitin for their joints.

  55. teric says:

    Sharon,

I am cooking for mine as well now and I’ve heard also that it should only be for short term. I’m to afraid to give anything else right now and hope this recall will be over soon. Be sure to get them some good vitamins & check w/ your vet.

I will say that my first Japanese Chin NEVER & I mean NEVER had one bite of dog food. She lived to be the ripe old age of 18. This was 14 years ago. Makes me wonder??????

  56. teric says:

    Barb,

Missing Link ! Yes, that’s a great idea. I had forgotten about that!

    Thanks!!!!

  57. Carolyn says:

Supposedly Canidae and Felidae are safe, right? But on the can of Felidae cat food I bought today, it says “formulated for PAWS.” Then when I checked the CNN website this afternoon, it lists ‘PAWS as a recalled food. Does anyone know if “PAWS” is the same as Candidae / Felidae?? This is way too confusing. And one more question, I know how to make homemade dog food, but how to make homemade cat food? Anyone?

  58. Barb says:

Cats and dogs need meat, vegetables and calcium like cheese, milk and sardines. But they also need a vitamin supplement with this people food. This would be ” Feline Missing Link”.

  59. Joe says:

Consider what might have been written if melamine-contaminated food products had been imported from “different companies” and “different manufacturers” located in the Middle East instead of China. The poisoning of dogs and cats, and related financial and psychological cost, would be grounds to suspect terrorism.
Our “special” relationship with China is one of the costs of being a debtor nation.

  60. Judy says:

I don’t trust Royal Canin at all. It’s unfortunate that they are remaining silent about the corn gluten issue. I don’t think any food with wheat gluten, rice gluten or corn gluten is safe. I am feeding my dogs Muenster Natural dog food made right here in Texas with ONLY ingredients grown in the U.S. with the exception of flax seed from Canada. It is available online if anyone would like to check it out. The website is muenstermilling.com - I personally know the owners.

  61. Carol A. says:

Is Royal Canin SO dry food for cats ok? the answer is NO NO NO NO NO.

See this thread by Dr. Elizbeth Hodgkins on www.yourdiabeticcat.com on this topic:

    http://www.yourdiabeticcat.com.....IC_ID=2550

and also, Dr Hodgkins says on YDC:

“In case everyone doesn’t know, Hills has announced a new food containing citrate as the miracle ingredient to solve the problem created by the c/d/s/d line. As you all know, c/d and s/d cause a new form of uroliths, calcium oxylate, by overacidifying a cat’s urine (to eliminate the problem their regular foods cause, struvite uroliths). Now, this was never tested for BEFORE they sold a bazillion dollars worth of c/d and s/d through vets who had no idea that they were creating a new disease. Now, they propose to sell this new untested food and just sit back and wait to see if a new population of “laboratory test animals” in the owned-cat population will get sick from it and if they do, it will take decades for them to do anything about it. This is insanity, pure and simple. I’d write a letter to vet pubs about it, but no one would publish it…..toxicity from contamination is just the tip of the iceberg folks…..

What can a vet say when you ask why they would trust this new diet, totally untested, when it was their trust of the old diet that caused them to unwittingly participate in making their patients sick? When does it end? When does the profession say “ENOUGH!”? It is not the cats that are defective…
You may get this from your vet…”well, some cats have predispositions to disease and we have to do the best we can at any time….all medications have side effects…”
IF you hear this, (and he/she is essentially saying that c/d and s/d are medications) ask why such medications with side effects are not tested like pharmceuticals where it is well understood that you may get adverse side effects as the price of the benfeit. The pet food companies, especially Hills, have for years argued that their Rx diets shouldn’t be regulated like medical drugs…well, which is it? Is it pet food or is it drugs? If the latter, then REGULATE and TEST it!!!!!!!! If it’s just pet food, then it shouldn’t CAUSE disease!”

  62. Carol A. says:

All dry food is poisonous for both cats and dogs, no matter what company makes it — Merrick or whatever. The carbohydrate content along means it is a “species inappropriate” diet for our carnivore friends.

For people who cring at feeding raw, do a bit more thinking on this issue — cats catch mice and birds..that is their natural prey. Remember they are carnivores and raw is a fabulous — absolutely fabulous — diet for them. Give it a try for 3-4 months and see what a difference it makes.

You can also order some from www.felinespride.com to try it out if you don’t have it together to make your own. That’s the same recipe as www.catnutrition.org

It is just because the pet food companies knew they could make a lot of money feeding CEREAL — rice, corn and all these merged and split ingredients that are gluten-based that the pets are having all these health problems - never mind the melanine alone.

My own cats are doing better than ever on raw diet www.catnutrition.org. Plus I’m saving a TON of money not buying the expensive, poisonous MediCal vet kibble that almost killed my female Siamese.

I will NEVER EVER feed commercial food again. Just raw meat with kitty supplements like Platinium Performance. It’s pretty simple to do this on your own and your cat will be healthier. Plus no big vet bills now — or later in life.

  63. Cathy Moore says:

If you have a food co-op or Whole Foods type store in your area, please make sure they know that Sensible Choice has been recalled. My local co-op didn’t know about the recall. They also ignored my emails. I had to go into the store in person and start removing items from the shelf and basically make a scene to get them to act.

And when I called the central administrative office to make sure that another branch of the same store was notified of the recall, the admin person argued with me, saying Sensible Choice wasn’t a Royal Canin product. I had to insist that she look at the link I gave her and notify the store manager.

I’ve about had it with this whole situation and several legislators are definitely hearing from me.

  64. BW says:

To Sly and the other lady who asked about Fancy Feast. I have a tiny bit of info. I have found out how to decipher a part of the long numbers on the bottoms of the can in order to find out where that particular can was processed. (see below) I only know about 5 flavors WITHOUT wheat gluten which I am using. Tender Beef, Savory Salmon, Gourmet Chicken, and Cod, Sole, and Shrimp feast. All without wheat gluten.

I called Purina today, and spoke to several people, finally a supervisor regarding the post on Itchmo about Nestle Purina having a big petfood processing plant in China. The first two people denied this, and said that it was absolutely all processed in the U.S. at their 17 different processing plants. Then I asked for the supervisor and she denied it also. It didn’t seem that she was intending to lie to me, she was very nice. I think she was uninformed. I read her the article about the Purina plant in China. She left, came back and said that information was inaccurate!

I said I wanted to know how to decipher the number codes on the bottoms of the Fancy Feast cans so I would know where they were processed.

She was very helpful, I read her 5 flavors, and she told me that
the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th, numbers on the bottom, give you the location of the processing plant for that flavor.
Four of my flavors were “1160″ She said that is in Jefferson Wisconsin. Great! I said. Then I read her the numbers of the Flaked Fish and Shrimp Feast!!! “1828″
She was quiet, and said OH, sounded a bit shocked and then said, oh my, it is processed in ( a very chinese sounding place!) I really think she was surprised. She put me on hold to go speak to someone and then she came back and she said that it was not processed in China, but it WAS processed in THAILAND!! After that, she seemed more prepared to believe that perhaps they did have a petfood processing plant in China too.

Anyway, I asked for codes for all 17 purina processing plants in the U.S.
so I could check them out when buying my FF, and that I wanted to know the origin of all the ingredients too.
She said she didn’t have that information, and could only look up the flavors I gave her the bar code numbers for, I only had 5 of those, if I had had more flavors, I think she would have told me their locations too, but I didn’t have any more. Someone else could call and ask about other flavors. She said she would definitely send my information and request to their headquarters in St. Louis and have someone get back to me, hopefully with the information I wanted, but that it would take a while. (I am sure it will.)

I am taking back the cans from Thailand. I don’t feel their processing regulations are as stringent as ours in the U.S., though I have doubts about ours too, and I fear Purina may be using local ingredients in Thailand too.
She certainly did seem to try to help me and seemed forthcoming about the cans I was discussing with her.
I told her I had friends waiting to hear what she could tell me, and I wanted to share the processing plant numbers with friends, and she said of course. So there it is, if this is a little bit helpful to anyone interested in Fancy Feast. My cats won’t eat any other canned food, and I have tried many supposedly good ones. Today, they don’t seem to want to eat the FF either, they just nibble at it. I hope the Innova EVO without any grain is safe, maybe that is satisfying them. I don’t know how to cook for them, they won’t eat human ground turkey, or beef. I’ve tried. I don’t use EVO canned its made by Menu. I don’t want any processed by Menu at all. Tried Merrick turkey dinner yesterday, but only one cat would eat that. It smelled good to me! But now I learn on Itchmo they own a rendering plant next to their petfood plant, and I think that is suspicious.

I am hoping no one has heard any horror stories about the Fancy Feast flavors without wheat gluten or rice protein. I am a bit alarmed by the lady who lost her cat to the gravy flavor. My heart goes out to her.
I bought some more beef and chicken to try and cook for them tomorrow, wish me luck. I have many cats as I am rescuer, and I am at my wits end.

  65. Judy says:

Those of you making your own foods, please educate yourselves! The meat must be balanced with the proper amounts of calcium or your pets will get sick. And NO, dogs do not need carbs or veggies in their foods any more than cats do, but they will tolerate them better.
Canidae looks more and more like the shining star in all of this.
I am in the processing of switching both dogs and cats to it.
They all love the dry, but some of the cats do not like the canned. Cats do not like changes in the diet, so any changes must be done over a few weeks time.
And RC shows their colors when they say they are getting a new source for all the CHEAP PSEUDO PROTEIN called gluten, that isn’t fit for any carnivore! They should not be using this crap in the first place! Cats and dogs need meat protein, which is very expensive by comparison.
I do not bring any gluten or protein concentrate into the house for mine to eat. I looked at a bag of “Chihuahua” food made by RC the other day.
It had Rice Protein Concentrate, as the source of protein. Shame on them!
Not only that, but a Chihuahua is a DOG the last time I looked, as are all the other ridiculous foods they have. One for every breed! Bulldog, Boxer, Lab, etc. This is the height of Marketing Genius! Look what all that stupid, extra packaging costs them! But it doesn’t matter. The consumer pays for it all! Even the POISON that comes with the cheap glutens they use. People should be calling them and telling them they will never buy their food unless they take the crap out of it! And mean it. That’s the only way it will change. Believe me, these big companies don’t give a rip about the health of our pets, only the almighty dollar!

  66. Judy says:

  67. Dara says:

I am feeding my cats Blue Buffalo dry food lite formula. Do you think that is safe? I know the kitty formula got recalled but I don’t see anything in the lite dry food formula that could be problematic. Is there any particular ingredients I should watch out for?

  68. Anonymous says:

I remember coming back to the US from a visit to Canada back in the late 1970s. I was questined at length if I bought any products made in “Red China.” At that point it was a CRIME to bring back something from Canada that was manufactured in China. How things have changed.

  69. Lorie says:

BW that is great info on FF I am one of the one with cats effected buy the Medleys with gravy. Iam using Merrick right now myself, I have read about the rendering plant also so I am kidding myself into only using the fish ones for now. Was going to go with Newmans, EVO, or Wellness till I found out that were canned by Menu. Then I was going to try Solid Gold dry till I found out it was made by Diamond. Wonder if these companies realize their rep went right down the toilet with Menu and Diamond. Its a shame.

I talked with a Royal Canin representative today and asked whether they had tested ALL their vegetable proteins to make sure there were no other problems. I sure hope so….

I have a question!….Does anyone have extensive knowledge about a Supplement product called “Missing Link?”

I’ve seen some interesting comments on it….positive ones at that…..but, given the constant unfolding of this whole recall mess….I need to know EVERYTHING about it!

Reading the labels on products is important…..but I NEED to know beyond that now! I need to know EVERYTHING, EVERYBODY and EVERY country that is involved in this product!

Since I am home-cooking for my fur-babies and am interested in providing the very best that I can for them….this product has sparked my interest in helping me to do so!

So….all you RESEARCH wizards….can you lend me a hand?

Oh..btw,…..if you see any “China-syndrome” link in the chain..let me know…. as I am no longer buying anything (knowingly anyways!) ….and I mean ANYTHING, from China! I refuse to help line wallets over there….as they kill us and our pets over here!!!……End of story!!

I thank you in advance for any help in regards to researching Missing Link Supplement!

In answer to Carolyn, who mentioned that Canidae formula is geared to PAWS - that stands for :

    P = Puppies
    A = Adults
    W = Working
    S = Seniors

Formulation is an All-Stage formulation for Dogs (Canidae) & Cats (Felidae) It has nothing to do with any recalled food.

We have a Shiba Inu & she is allergy sensitive & we have been feeding her Canidae since she was a puppy & she is now 4 years old & doing great on this food. We are now also supplementing her (as a treat) with Kumpi Adult food. Since most treats are manufactured overseas we use these 2 products & our Shiba loves the food & accepts it as a treat since that is what we have done since she was a pup.

  73. Beth says:

Also wanted to add that we also use Old Mother Hubbard Dog Biscuits as a treat & they have a notice on their website that they do not use the offending products.

We have been using the assorted flavors variety for the last 4 years also.

Di, I think they are safe…..but, for what it’s worth, I just tried to switch my 2 cats over to the Felidae chicken and rice, canned and dry, and while they will eat some of the canned, they won’t touch the dry. I did try the Blue Buffalo wet food in tuna but they really didn’t like it. Also, it contains that vitamin K/mela something that is not supposed to be good for them. I forget the actual name/spelling.

I still can’t believe all this is happening.

Actually, since I am not very trusting, this is something that I have suspected from the beginning. I wonder if it is true?? Only time & investigation will tell. Do all of you realize that pet food is BIG BUSINESS? Our animals, despite how we have domesticated them, are still ANIMALS! Carnivors! They purge themselves with spring grasses when available. The balance of their diets in the wild is what has fallen off a tree or been dug up- NOTHING COOKED OR PROCESSED! Dogs lived on road kill for thousands of years! Week old offal!
Today we are seeing high incidents of cancers, pancreaotic prblems, thyroid, skin, bowel dysfunction and the average life span of dogs slowly shrinking and vet bills soaring. If your Doctor sold YOU a precribed diet, they would be up against malpractice and a conflict of interest. I have been furious about this one fact alone for many years. What baloney! Not to mention once you get your dog used to a brand what is the deal about never being able to switch or substitue food without total toxic shock or withdrawal symptoms????? What’s that all about people????
Better off getting a good raw food recipe and making your own if can’t afford the premade ones and you love your pets. Make batches and freeze it.
What the heck did people do before Purina? No mad cow disease either! Micro manage you family life- although we love them like children, they are on 4 legs and their evolution has not been the sames as ours. KEEP IT SIMPLE AND NATURAL!
Oh yeah and bathe your dogs monthly- don’t buy into the myth they don’t need it- they live amongst us! Even outdoor dogs can use it in the summer months to help rid them of parisites.

I too lost my best friend the day before Xmas. Up until last fall I had two german shepherds that were extremely healthy. Ages 13 and 2. They both had been fed Royal Canin Sensible Choice Natural Blend for most of their lives….I loved this food!…..this variety has not made the recall list Yet……However both suddenly developed extreme itching….I now realize it is a classic symptom of renal failure. Shelby died with reanl failure symptoms and Radar has been to the vet three times and placed on various medications for the itching….Airborn allergies…ya right! Thank goodness I recently changed from my favorite food and things seem to be getting a little better. Just not ready to run off for another $200 vet visit after paying $40 a bag for food forever…just so I can kill my dogs. I feel very alone and will have to figure this out on my own I guess :(.

I looked up the dog food from Muenster Milling someone recommended earlier. It has menadione sodium bisulfite complex in the chicken and rice. This I believe is the form of Vitamin D that was banned in humans because too many babies were dying from it. Another of their dog foods lists just Vitamin D3 supplement. But not what kind of Vitamin D3. So this raises the red flags.

  93. Elizabeth Schmidt says:

does anyone know if this statment is true….!!!

“The CFO of Menu Foods, Mark Wiens sold about half of his shares in the company three weeks before the poisoned pet food recall was announced, Canadian insider trading reports show.
Please watch the video “the Corporation” to learn how big corporations get away with murder. By the way…Nestle, Coke and NutraChem are in it together, just to name a few. ”

How would I check out if it is true?

  94. Mike Bazurto says:

My shepherd/lab mix was prescribed RC Urinary SO. She itches and scratches, licks her paws… I imagine it is from the corn and chicken.

I don’t want a recurrent bout with stone formations or crystals in the urine.
    Any suggestions?
