So You Think Your Dog Can Dance

“Dancing With Your Dog” is not a spoof of the show “Dancing With The Stars. It is a global sport run by the World Canine Freestyle Organization.

Some of the most talented dancing canines in the country came to Denver, Colorado for the International Dog Dancing Competition this past weekend.

Patie Ventre and a group of women founded the official organization that sponsors dog dancing (also known as canine freestyle) competitions eight years ago.

Ventre said that when she tells people that she dances with her dog, they think she is a bit crazy.

“They look at me and say, ‘You dance with your dog, you must have a screw loose,’” Ventre said. “They think I hold up my dog’s paws like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.”

Ventre added that she does have one thing in common with Fred and Ginger: she likes to show off.

Canine freestyle events include judges, scorecards, dedicated fans, medals, and of course excited and anxious competitors.

In the end, it doesn’t matter who won or lost, who followed every single step or who may have strayed a bit.

“You just feel like a very special person and you feel like you have a very special pet,” Ventre said.

I would LOVE to go see something like this. IF ONLY they would come to Des Moines! This weekend at our State Fair Grounds (off season) there will be a 3 day AKC National Dog Show. There should be about 30 or more vendors there for your Doggie Fun Stuff shopping pleasure. And of course, around 1700 dogs competing. SO MUCH EYE CANDY! SEE YA THERE!

Now, if “napping with your cat” were a sport, we could turn pro.

i had a black boy cat who liked it if you pogoed around the room with him in your arms to the Dead Kennedys and my persian liked playing ‘ my little pony’ by riding on your back as you trotted around the kitchen table. but i pretty much agree with diane- freestyle napping with your cat is the way to go.

I think dogs are natural ‘dancers’. They become so happy it just spills out in every direction! (at least mine do).
