Dear Sir:

We rescued a male briard two years ago from Pennsylvania. We reside in Beltsville, Maryland and are in need of a vet to inspect an ear problem that our dog had from the time we adopted him.

We clean the ear and put medication in it, but it hasn’t cleared up his problem. He cries out when he scratches anywhere near his right ear area, and he doesn’t want us to touch the ear at all.

We are both unemployed, for several years now, and are indigents of the State of Maryland. I have sought so many places for help for our rescued Briard, and have come up with none that will help us without having money in our pockets.

Does your organization take care of assisting rescue dogs when they have veterinarian needs and/or necessary surgical needs? If you aren’t and you know of any organization that will help us give relief to our 4 legged family member, please have them call us at 1-301-534-7008 or write to my husband at craigstevensmith@comcast.net Thank you.

Sincerely,
Audrey C. Smith

Ookie the Dogfighter will be sentenced tomorrow, December 10. Quick thinking by the federal prosecutors means that the dogs' money is - literally - already in the bank.

I am glad all but one of these dogs will be allowed to live. Obviously, the 48 were not identical in temperament, socialization, aggression, and "pet" potential. It's a satisfactory arrangement, IMO.

It certainly beats being (unsuccessfully) hung from a tree, then drowned in a five-gallon bucket of water.

Act Now, you have GOT to be kidding.
Best Friends Animal Society is a world class organization. Yes, they raise a lot of money, and they need every cent to handle the problems created by people who hurt animals. Where others would just give up, Best Friends never does. Having two dogs from Best Friends, and also having volunteered there, there is no place in the world that cares for the sick, injured, unwanted animals more than Best Friends. Their programs and facilites are second to none. They take animals from all over the world that others will not and shower love, care, and attention on every single one. We can all sleep easier at night knowing Best Friends has always and will always have the best interest of the animals in their hearts and their minds.

One of our adopted dogs is a 10 year old German Shepard...dog agressive, no teeth, with bad arthritis that had bit someone. They loved that dog, at their sactuary, for that entire length of time. When he started to show signs of aging, he was put into hydrotherapy treatments, acupuncture, massages, special diet. You name it, and they did it for him. That is a sure sign of love, respect, and committment to all living beings.

As I understand it, Vick was supposed to DEPOSIT nearly $1 million to pay for the cost of seizing, taking care of and eventually finding a home for the dogs seized from his property. Whether he actually handed over the money to the court, I don't know. Doubt it.

It has been noted that Vick appears to be defaulting on a mortgage, and other large loans. And whether the Falcons will file suit to recover $20 million in bonuses remains to be seen.

In the end, one wonders if anyone will recover a dollar.

Nora and Rufus, yes there is a God. BUT Best Friends are most definitely NOT HIS ANGELS! As HSUS, they are good at making people believe that the animals are their priority. They have ulterior motives, not the least of which I would imagine is a healthy chunk of the $1M Vick had to put up for the care of the dogs. I only hope there is a real angel somewhere that will monitor these dogs for a long time to come.

Please educate yourselves about the REAL Best Friends Organization and their founder.

I read on the blog of BAD RAP about a confrontation with the head of PETA. PETA, of course, thinking all pit bulls and other "dangerous" breeds should be eliminated. I give my congrats to the people willing to step up and rehab these dogs. It's gonna be a tough job, but I imagine the rewards will be boundless!
