Why is a Canadian company importing wheat? I thought Canada was a wheat exporter.

Of course I know the answer: it is cheaper.

OK, so we now know that Westaqua (which is also located in Vancouver, BC just like Skretting Co.) rec'd at least 353,000 lbs of contaminated "wheat-something-that-the-FDA-can't-quite-figure-out" directly from China last *July and August*. And Westaqua's website [www.westaqua.com] states: "Westaqua 's central focus is on the growing aquaculture business which includes Salmon, Trout and Yellowtail. We are a leading supplier of ingredients to feed manufacturers in aquaculture. "
[AND] "Westaqua is a leading supplier of ingredients to the animal feed industry. We supply many products to the manufacturers of feed for Dairy, Cattle, Chicken, Turkey, Hog, Horse and many other farm animals. Our extensive knowledge of supply and demand trends for a host of raw ingredients can give you the edge in your procurement needs."
[AND] "Westaqua also caters to the pet food industry by supplying ingredients to the food manufacturers of dry Cat and dog foods. Westaqua will supply you with on-time deliveries at the lowest cost and with the highest level of service. Westaqua provides leading technology in addition to unparalleled product and market knowledge."

So it may be that trout, salmon, tuna, unnamed other fish, dairy products, beef, chicken, turkey, pork, "many other farm animals", and thus far unnamed & unidentified DRY cat & dog foods are also contaminated.

"What's for dinner?"

"It appears that seven hatcheries in the Pacific Northwest used this food — 6 in Washington, 1 in Oregon. Many of the fry in these hatcheries are released into the streams."

So, if this information is accurate, wild caught fish from the Northwest could be contaminated too! Oh boy.

Nina,
I read the article abouth the glycerin contamination a few days ago, the FDA put out a warning on May 4 I believe. My concern is pet toothpaste. I'm afraid to use it so I e-mailed the co. yest., not that they would even know if it's contaminated or even test it. I'll share if they respond. In the mean time, I 'm not sure how to clean my dogs teeth. So many ingredients that are questionable!!! I would appreciate advice if anyone knows of safe products. Also, my dog has not been the same since switching from Eukaneuba (before recall situation) to Wellness (FISH!!!)to CA Natural. She's 2 and not handling even slow changes very well, I don't think she's digesting her food properly. I've been giving her chicken & rice homecooked and CA Natural to minimize ingredients.

From the Westaqua website:

“Westaqua also caters to the Pet Food Industry by supplying ingredients to the Food Manufacturers of dry Cat and Dog Foods.”
-
Do think think this is where all the recalls of dry are going to start coming in

Eric,

My cats eat KUMPIKAT as a snack, vitamin source and when I go out of town. When I am around dry is not their first choice of any cat food. They are wet food junkies and since there is no safe wet food I have been trying to find safe other choices.

Cynthia,

They have the crown prince sardines at whole foods soI guess i will be getting chicken and sardines from there . Yuck. Smelly Sardines.
