Dear Pet Lovers,

We have been greatly heartened by the wonderful response that our SOS Campaign has generated from all over the United States. I apologize that I have not done a good job keeping up with the posts on this site. Unfortunately, my real job keeps interfering with my volunteer work.

Please feel free to e-mail me directly at info@lifelongfriends.org to check in on us at any time or if you have any questions.

Thanks to the donations we received, we have paid off all the vets that we owed money to. We have gotten enough donations to help us stay afloat for a while and care for the almost 400 animals we have. We are applying for grant funds and waiting to hear if we will qualify. We are also looking for people who are interested in planning and coordinating fundraisers for our shelter. Please contact me if you are interested in doing this for us.

On another note, we have applied for a grant to support our Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program. This program helps low-income pet owners get their pets spayed/neutered for free. We did not get funding from the state this year. I know they have a lot of groups that apply, and they try to rotate who gets funding from year to year. I have requested $15,000 for the spay/neuter program from My Hometown Helper. Please see the info below to see how to show support for our grant proposal.

This spay/neuter program helps our shelter by reducing the number of unwanted puppies and kittens that are born in our community. This will in turn reduce the number of stray and abandoned animals that come in our shelter through animal control. We have offered this program since 2000, and we have helped spay/neuter over 5,000 animals in our target area. That is an awesome track record!

To show support for this very important program, please go to:
http://www.myhometownhelper.com/ViewProject.aspx?tell=2&id=31168
Posting a comment is like casting a vote. We are competing with other organizations for these funds, so every comment counts.

Please cross post!

Sincerely,
Janet Cain

I am selling things on ebay right now to help raise money for the shelter. All proceeds will be donated to them. Someone already bought something of mine today and because of my message in my ebay auction with the shelters name, she looked up the shelter and donated herself as well!

The word is being spread, hopefully it will be enough :)

Also please note that this shelter incurred $20,000 of vet bills along with lost innocent lives due to the antics of MENU FOODS.

Thank you very much for all your help and support! We are very appreciative of the concern that so many people are expressing for our shelter family.

We are saying our prayers and keeping our paws crossed that we can keep our dogs and cats safe with us so we may continue to look for loving, forever homes for them.

Sincerely,
Janet Cain

Yes. In 2006 Town Lake Animal Shelter euthanized 12,000 animals. It is a horrifying number. My best friend lives in the area (Round Rock just outside of Austin) and she does rescue and foster care for dogs (mainly German Shepherd rescue) who are on doggie death row. She fosters them and finds them a loving forever home under the condition that if the new pet parents at any time cannot keep the animal, it is returned to her. She also always keeps 3 German Shepherds of her own. The Austin and surrounding area has so many strayed and abandoned dogs and cats. The Williamson County shelter is also going through an extremely troubling time. They are killing dogs and cats who have only been there for 3 days and mistakenly killed a dog who's owners were looking for her at that time. They are also under investigation for animal neglect. God help all the shelters. This is such a tragic situation.

I sent this in because I've been following this shelter since March. Someone donated recalled pet food and it was fed to some of the animals by volunteers who didn't know what was going on at the time. I believe they lost several cats and incurred over $20,000 in expenses caring for the damage done to the rest. I'm unemployed now as well so can't contribute much myself except getting the word out. Based on the news I've read and seen these are good hearted people trying to do the best for these animals who will be euthanized for sure if they end up some place like the Town Lake Animal Shelter which kills thousands of animals every year and yet cannot get people around here to spay and neuter their pets.

I have posted a notice on my Myspace page so everyone on my group will see the article, shelters website and how to donate links. I will also be donating and selling some things to donate more money to them(unemployed.)

I sure hope they make enough money to stay open, especially with the word out about them now!
