Texas Woman To Serve Six Month Prison Sentence For Stabbing Dog

Joanne Lee Hinojosa, a Texas woman, was sentenced to six months in prison with ten years deferred abjudication for stabbing her ex-husband’s dog 27 times.

Hinojosa pleaded guilty to the 2006 stabbing of Marti, a 20-pound mix. She went to her ex-husband’s house and started to yell at him. Hinojosa then took Marti in the house, where she was later found with a knife sticking out of her side.

Marti had to be later euthanized because of her injuries.

Hinojos’s lawyer said she was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder from the dissolution of her marriage and from a bad childhood.

In the plea deal, Hinojosa must continue mental health counseling, undergo anger management treatment and perform 250 hours of community service. Also she may not be the sole caretaker of an animal for ten years.

Currently, Hinojosa and her new husband own several animals together.

The animals that are with her and her current husband need to be removed from that home! She is mentally ill and should never be allowed to own another animal in her life ever!

I’m ashamed to live in the state of Texas. The mentalitiy of the people here make me sick.

  2. Nora and Rufus says:

Her attorney must be a blood sucking leach. Post traumatic syndrome? Give me an F-in break!!! So she can get away with murdering an innocent dog in a most horrific way….and to also terrorize her husband…This woman is an insanely jealous, living nightmare…..who can find any excuse to get away with violent murder. She deserves to be punsished far more than a measley 6 months and she will always be a potentionally dangerous person to all of society. She has proved that quite clearly. She should be put down like a rabid animal.

  3. Donna says:

This women deserves real texas justice. Just what the world needs an other wacko wandering the streets. Public out cry should demand hanging. Such a sick justice system. An innocent animal and no compassion for the victim. We as a nation are in very bad shape.

  4. Charlie says:

I AGREE WITH NORA and RUFUS!!!! Very well put! The woman is a monster.

  5. NH says:

PTSD? Wow, she had a really good lawyer. Donna I’m with you - give her real Texas justice!

  6. Stefani says:

OMG!! This woman should NOT be allowed to have animals EVER! What a nutcase, ala Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction.

Oh please, whine to me about your freakin childhood! These people make me sick!

She needs more than 6 months.

There’s no gray area on this one. I agree with those who believe this person should not be allowed to own pets under any circumstances, even as a co-owner. Good grief! That was the situation that resulted in the last dog’s murder.

  8. Julie M says:

I agree 100% with Don. What are they thinking allowing her around animals? Her new husband should take those animals and run.

  9. Kristy says:

Don Earl made an excellent point.
Hello??? What happens when her new husband realizes she’s a whack job and leaves? Same sentence for his animals? Let’s hope she doesn’t have kids - for the sake of the kids AND so she doesn’t replicate her DNA.

Makes you wonder how much less animal cruelty there would be in the US if we imposed more fitting sentences. Yes there would still be some, just like there are some child murders, but waaayyyyy less if people understood there were real consequences.

  10. NH says:

Let me add to my earlier comments…

What??!! Someone married her after knowing this about her? And I can’t find a husband? What’s wrong with this picture!? I’m a nice person, I love animals and I have a good job. She gets married AGAIN and here I am single.

    Ugh.

Wow! What’s going on with the Texas Justice system. Like a 10 year period of no sole ownership of a pet is going to make a difference. All animals from the New Home should be removed immediately, and if I were her husband I would be sleeping with one eye open!! Forget the community service, this woman needs to be committed . Lest we forgot, she did stab the dog 27 times. That is rage not stress!

  12. BTaylor322 says:

Oh Boy! I do I ever agree with everyone HERE!!!!

AWWWW, she had a “rotten childhood”. GEEE!!!! A lot of people have had rotten childhoods still manage not to brutalize an innocent animal. Just what sort of “community service” are they thinking of for her? Day care?

She SHOULD be locked up - for all 10 years, and if I were hubby #2, I’d clear out - fast! All their animals should be rescued from them, too, because just maybe he’s as sick as she is! They should be rescued in any case!

  13. mittens says:

now that i am over 40 i’ve come to 2 very important conclusions about life in general-

first off, most everyone had a bad childhood. (not everyone is capable of stabbing a living being to death because of it. therefore….)

second at this age you’ve broken up with at least one person of significance and most people after a period of hurt move on and if you do not you need to grow up. (odds are you will not stab a pet to death because of the break up.)

court rooms have become a forum for psychiatric excuses for people who refuse to control themselves as we expect adults to- there’s always some bloody blankin’ excuse that makes of the victimizer the victim. this isn’t justice- it’s faulty reasoning at best and daytime tv pop psychology in the service of enabling criminals at worse.

  14. Texan says:

    Hey Sharon,

Don’t rag on your state. These people are all over the place and they all deserve to be drug out into the street and shot.

I love my state and if I didn’t, I would leave.

  15. Denise says:

NH she probably married a crazy like herself. my son says the same thing and I say to you both you will meet someone very nice hang in there. also 6 months for this crime. This is serious but the law is way too slight here. they don’t take crimes against animals serious enough. i go with what goes around comes around!

  16. 2CatMom says:

Unfortunately, the state will only get serious when she kills a child the same way after the child’s father leaves her. What a sorry excuse for a human being she is.

  17. kaefamily says:

She deserves harsher prison sentence. So do her sick lawyer and the incompetent judge! What will make her stop at maiming only the animals? Where is PETA? Where is USHS? Where is ASPC? One animal is not worthy of their expenses and efforts? It has to be the Vick’s proportion of a heinous crime?!!

  18. Don Earl says:

If evidence that childhood abuse was so severe it serves as a mitigating factor in adult crimes, then the childhood abuser should be brought to justice also. Better late than never.

  19. sammie says:

Easy fix - euthanize the b****!

  20. Laurie says:

Yes, I am stunned at such a slap on the hand for such a sick, sick, sick crime. She is a murderer…I don’t care about her bad childhood and PTSD…that’s nothing…and definitely doesn’t justify killing an innocent being. She should be serving a life sentence as should, in my opinion, anyone who intentionally kills someone unprovoked. It would be a lot less scary if she had stabbed the ex. Killing an innocent is truly sick. Poor little dog!! It makes me heartsick!

  21. furmom says:

She was insanely mad at her husband so she stabbed the dog, obviously instead of killing her husband. With her mental problems, how long before someone gets her mad again, and she stabs a person instead? Not only animals are in serious danger from a person like this. But she wasn’t completely nuts, she didn’t stab her husband only because there would have been a very long jail term for it. If the penalty for stabbing an animal was more serious, she likely would have not done that, but smashed his car or house instead.

  22. The Lioness says:

Jeebus. 6 months is a joke. She should serve no less than 6 YEARS, and she should be kept away from all domestic animals, always!

    ~The Lioness

  23. Nigel says:

She is a sack of trash and deserves the death penalty. She certainly does not deserve to live to see even one moment of happiness again.

  24. The only sane one here says:

It’s just a dog. Fine her and be done with it. Oh, and the term ‘murder’ only applies to humans.
