The use of animal forensics in solving investigations is definitely on the rise. Not only is the use of animal forensics important in pet vs. pet cases, it also can be instrumental in cases where an animal attacks a human, or humans abusing animals or even humans committing crimes against each other.
In one investigation, a lab used DNA testing to match dog’s excrement on a man’s shoes and excrement found near the crime scene. This piece of evidence helped convict the man. Forensic veterinarians rely on the same procedures that standard crime scene investigators use: ballistics, toxicology, and blood splatter analysis to help solve animal cruelty cases.
Don’t be surprised if CBS introduces the show CSI: Animals Edition soon.
