They have been successful in the past at removing animals from abusers who’ve filed suit, despite the rulings of some of the other bureaucratic agencies. The THS and OSPCA also have to deal with a province-appointed “Animal Care Review Board” which is an appeals board that citizens can go to. Soderholm may just have behaved badly enough in this situation, not only by neglecting Cyrus, but by threatening the officer, that Cyrus has a chance at being rehomed.

Lee Oliver is indeed a good friend to be so supportive.

As far as the OSPCA citing Smith for misconduct for using the handcuffs, I think this was unfair. I would have thought Smith’s first obligation would have been to keep the animal safe. And if this meant handcuffing the jerk for leaving the dog in the car, then so be it. After all, why was Smith issued handcuffs, if not to use them for situations such as this?

Regarding Soderholm’s statement, “This isn’t the Middle Ages when you put someone in the city square and people throw rocks at you and spit at you when they’ve done a crime,” I can only believe that in cases where people leave pets in the car, perhaps we SHOULD inflict Middle Age punishment!

While I don’t know the basis of the reinstatement, I would like to think that the letters and emails we sent to the Canadian officials had some impact.

Regardless, I am very happy for Toronto. You’ve got a wonderful friend in Tre Smith!

PS: I know Cyrus is still in his foster home and doing well……is he a pawn in all of this, or will they be finding him a new home?

Tre is a colourful character and he does so much for the animal welfare cause by getting into the public eye. He’s a regular on a TV series, Animal Housecalls, which covers humane issues.

I can just imagine the OSPCA hearing, with everyone “harrumphing” around the table and warning him to be more circumspect next time.

Now, if only the same fortune can come to Jamie Glandon, the assistant ACO on admin leave from the Rushville, Indiana shelter for being the whistleblower on cruel and improper euthanization procedures. The shelter has an obscene 93% kill rate. Jamie was hired on something like 6 months ago, and has done some amazing things to improve conditions there in the short time she has been on the job. But she is being hung out to dry by the same glacial bureaucracy (with a little ol’boy mentality thrown in) as Tre was.
