Vick To Be Sentenced December 10 After Guilty Plea To Dog Fighting Charge; Vick Apologizes

Filed under: Dogs, National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, News for Cats, Dogs & Owners — Emily Huh @ 11:41 am

Vick

Michael Vick pleaded guilty to a federal dogfighting conspiracy charge and will wait for a December 10 sentencing date that could send him to prison.

U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson accepted Vick’s guilty plea. He asked: “Are you entering the plea of guilty to a conspiracy charge because you are in fact guilty?”

Vick said yes.

Hudson added that he is not restricted by sentencing guidelines and can impose the maximum sentence of up to five years in prison. “You’re taking your chances here. You’ll have to live with whatever decision I make,” Hudson said.

The judge also told Vick by pleading guilty to a felony, he loses his right to vote, hold public office, be on a jury and own firearms.

Vick’s mother started to cry when Judge Hudson asked Vick to confirm that he understood that the judge has leeway in sentencing.

In a press conference after his guilty plea, Vick made a statement to the public. He made his statement without any notes or papers.

“I take this opportunity to speak from the heart. First, I want to apologize for all the things that I have done and I have allowed to happen. I want to personally apologize to Commissioner Goodell, Arthur Blank, Coach Bobby Petrino, and my Atlanta Falcons teammates, for I was not honest and forthright in our discussions.”

“I want to apologize to all the young kids out there. I want to apologize for my immature acts. What I did was very immature, and so that means I need to grow up.”

“I totally ask for forgiveness and understanding as I move forward to bettering Michael Vick the person, not the football player. I take full responsibility for my actions. Not for one second will I sit right here and point the finger and try to blame anybody else for my actions or what I’ve done. I’m totally responsible, and those things just didn’t have to happen.”

“We all make mistakes. I made a mistake and used bad judgment and made a bad decision. And those things just can’t happen. Dog fighting is a horrible thing and I reject it. And through this situation, I found Jesus and turned my life to God. I ask him for forgiveness.”

“And now I have to pay the consequences, and it will help me as a person. I have a lot to think about. I offer my deepest apologies to those out there in the world who were affected by this whole situation. I am more disappointed by myself because it’s seeing all the young kids that look up to Michael Vick as a role model. I hope every young kid out there in the world watching this interview who’s been following this case will use me as an example for using better judgment and making better decisions.”

“Once again, I offer my deepest apologies. I will redeem myself because I have to.”

  2. E. Hamilton says:

Vick is STILL getting SPECIAL treatment and it makes me sick.

How FAST did this happen? He should have had to endure the slow grind of the justice system, like any “consumer” would have had to endure.

    I saw this part-

In the plea deal, Vick agreed to cooperate with investigators and provide all information he may have on any criminal activity and to testify if necessary. Vick also agreed to turn over any documents he has and to submit to polygraph tests.

Vick agreed to “make restitution for the full amount of the costs associated” with the dogs that are being held by the government.
    advertisement

“Such costs may include, but are not limited to, all costs associated with the care of the dogs involved in that case, including if necessary, the long-term care and/or the humane euthanasia of some or all of those animals.”

That is EXACTLY what I want from the pet food poisoners and the apology too! And 5 months , going on 6 since the recall, a FREAKING year since the pets started dying and the suffering began and WHERE ARE THE ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUPS FOR US!!!???

Citizens who pay taxes, do NOT fight dogs, pay astounding vet bills due to to FRAUD and have uncounted dead and wounded pets, well, WE COUNT TOO!
I think we count for MORE than a dog fighting weasel!

And oh yeah, we alerted the country if not the entire world, about being slowly poisoned and for THAT alone we did more public service than a freaking dog fighting football player.

  3. Lynn says:

Not to lessen the impact of the pet food poisoning, but sometimes we have to shift gears and fight those battles that we have a chance of winning. The Vick issue is fightable with a hope for some justice. Sadly, the pet food recall was too entrenched in high government, married to pet food companies…..very difficult to fight.

There’s not a soul on this website that doesn’t want justice for the pet food poisonings. But right now I think we need to focus on Vick. We can’t let him get off with a slap on the wrist.

True, there were thousands of animals that die in the pet food recall, but there are also thousands of animals that have died in dog fights.

I hope everyone whose pets were harmed or killed in the pet food incidents trust that I mean no disrespect. Nor is the issue dead and buried in my mind. Not by a long shot. We just have to make an impact where we can.

  4. nora says:

I feel ya E. Hamilton. I feel so sad for your fur baby who passed and your tears and tortured pain without that wonderful companionship. I hold my Rufus close (78 lbs of solid Aussie muscle) each night before falling asleep and give God thanks that he was spared. I hope that someday you can open your heart to a needy furbaby that is waiting for you to love, care for and protect them. Home cooking is working out great for my dogs. It would for you also. As far as Michael Vick is concerned….I don’t think he will ever be capable of really feeling the remorse of the pain and suffering he caused those poor dogs. It is so infuriating that he will never know that real compassion. Yes, he says he is sorry…but if he had not gotten caught, he would still be running the Bad News Kennels. GOD STOPPED IT. AND GOD IS TAKING HIS FOOTBALL AWAY!!!! Know that Michael Vick.

  5. E. Hamilton says:

    http://itchmoforums.com/making.....78.45.html

Last post in the thread pretty much says it.

And Vick is toast, done deal, taking up time on THAT is not going to do much, nor did anything said here make a bit of difference to the “powers that be” in what happened to Vick, so resistance is futile in that case too.

  6. EmilyS says:

oh well, he found Jesus, so that makes it all right then.

Yet another cross for Jesus to bear…

  7. Moonbeams says:

Well I’ll believe it when I see it. The NFL can lift their indefinite suspension - indefinite only means that they don’t know how long it will be - could be two weeks or two months.

He is “being play nice” now because he wants: Oh please don’t take my millions away, oh pretty please don’t make me not play football. I’m so sorry for killing those dogs ……” in a brutal fashion too I might add.

Right, I got a Brooklyn Bridge for sale too Sick Vick. I believe that you’ll stop killing dogs when you too are in the ground and no longer breathing and I hope you burn in hades for the horror you inflicted.

I hope America loves dogs more than it loves football - cause that’s what it comes down to!

Sicko Vicko needs to join Sicko Micheal and leave the U.S.of A.

  8. CGP says:

The only thing Michael Vick is sorry about is getting caught. The PR machine is spinning now - if anyone believes he is truly contrite that’s just nuts. He would still be dogfighting if he had the choice.

    BTW who is Sicko Michael?

  9. Moonbeams says:

Michael Jackson maybe it’s Sicko Jacko or something like that!

  10. Lynn says:

I disagree. There’s a scourge of dog-fighting out there and it needs to be stopped. Not just as it relates to Vick. But throughout all the ghettos. That is not to say that pet food poisoning is not just as strong or even a stronger issue.

I suspect that Itchmo may be in the process of subdividing this website into general issues, dog-fighting, pet food poisoning….. This affords each of us an opportunity to focus in the area in which we feel we can best contribute or thoughts.

  11. Moonbeams says:

I’ve seen the attitude of “Sport Officials” when their bad boy players get in trouble, and I have not heard of “harsh” long term punishment. Not even O.J. suffered that much for his criminal behavior (double homicide) so I simply don’t believe that Vick will suffer much over this. He will rebound and go back to dog fighting - he’ll just be more careful about it that’s all.

Dog fighting makes me ill to my stomach and it is done in secret and the matches moved around with little advance notice - it’s a wonder that Vick was caught at all. But I’m glad he lost his endorsements and I hope that Nike and the others don’t recant!

  12. Lynn says:

    Curious about a couple things:

    1. Why are all the date and timestamps displayed as Eastern Time [when Itchmo is in Washington State, last I heard]? My computer clock is set on Pacific Time.
    2. What are these “University Update” entries? I guess it’s supposed to be an automatic entry whenever news pops up that relates to the ongoing discussion……but it sure seems to be added much after we already know about it.

ITCHMO ADMIN: University Update is a spam-back-linker which we delete every time we see it. As per the clock, that’s what we’ve always been on (and the majority of our users are on Eastern timezone).

  13. Denise says:

    Vick quote:
“What I did was very immature so that means I need to grow up,”

not one single expression of remorse for the countless dogs that were mercilessly victimized and brutalized over the 6 years he bankrolled this barbaric enterprise.

Arthur Blank gave a somber, powerful press conference and HE DID mention the animal cruelty aspect of what Vick did that was the primary objective of the ‘venture’.

I hope the judge gives this heartless, deceitful convicted felon 2-3 yrs. The real victims deserve justice.

  14. Moonbeams says:

I think that Vick just might enjoy killing the dogs - otherwise why do it? Why do something so distasteful if one really doesn’t want to kill? Don’t anti-social murders begin by torturing and killing animals first?

Vick killed those dogs in such a brutal fashion because he enjoyed it. No other explanation makes any sense. With his money and his fame, he could hire thugs to do his dirty work - but no, he did it himself because he likes it.

When he gave the death sentence to those poor pit bulls - did he hang his head and wear a suit and speak politely? The guy is a menace to animals and to our civilized society - he belongs in jail with those of like mind and nature where he can get a taste of his own dirty methods.

  15. Stefani says:

The choice of words still leaves much to be desired, and shows that Vick has not truly accepted the horror of what he has done.

What he did is not merely “immature.” Only cruel, psychologically disturbed children are cruel to animals like this. We have all met children like that, or can remember them. But this is not something to be ascribed to “immaturity” as though it is an activity a child or youthful person might engage in. It takes a very mentally and emotionally broken and unfeeling person to do these things, not just an immature person or one with bad judgment.

This also is not “bad judgment” or a mere “mistake.” Again the kind of horrendous cruelty it takes to fight dogs is beyond anything that can be characterized as a mistake.

He glosses over all this. But what he doesn’t explicitly admit is that dog fighting involves:

The use of bait animals. To train his dogs, undoubtedly bait animals were used. This means that puppies, sometimes kittens, and weaker dogs and hung up and the fighters are provoked to attack the dangling helpless bait animals, eviscerating them alive, to strengthen the fighters blood thirst.

The killing of the losing animals. Not only are these animals made to fight each other to death or near death, but the losers were wet down and electrocuted or beaten to death.

Of course, then there is the horror inflicted on the winners, who suffer injuries, and are mistreated to make them mean.

Then there is the gambling on pain, brutality, and death, and the cheering of it.

A mistake? Immature? Vick continues to minimize the horror of what he has done. The problem with this plea agreement is that we will never get to hear in court testimony on the details of what Vick did. And THIS is what children need to know.

NOT that Vick made a mistake. NOT that he was immature. BUT that Vick participated in, sanctioned, paid for, and personally himself did many of those things — had bait animals hung and shred to bits alive, beat and electrocuted dogs, mistreated them, and cheered all teh while.

His statement doesn’t go far enough, and when he releases a statement that demonstrates a true understanding of WHAT he did, and WHY it was wrong — that shows true understanding — then it will be something children should read. Not this. He still doesn’t get it.

I am so sick of people saying they’ve found Jesus as a way to claim redemption in the eyes of the public. Its sickening.

    1. He should have had to endure the slow grind of the justice system, like any “consumer” : The only reason he pleaded guilty was because the system did work fast-he had to avoid pleading guilty to even MORE charges. What were those charges? You have to wonder.

    2. Don’t anti-social murders begin by torturing and killing animals first? :
Seems to me I have read this is so.

At least cruelty to animals is getting highly visible attention and animals are being kept in the national spotlight in a big way.

Vick said “What I did was very immature so that means I need to grow up,” . He still doesn’t get it (and I fear he never will). What he did was not immature it was sociopathic!!

  19. menusux says:

Why it is that everybody finds religion AFTER they’ve done something deplorable? Where was it being hidden from them before?

All of us who live past childhood go through an immature stage–fortunately the symptoms are not outright brutality. There are some people who, while they’ve advanced in years, are still immature–but they are don’t commit acts like this.

Hope Judge Hudson doesn’t buy into this canned BS–know I don’t.

Thank you ! The Jesus -Pit Bull thing almost made me pee my panties.

  21. Gindy says:

“What were those charges? You have to wonder.”

Gambling charges and the RICO charges that would be filed immediately afterwards. The possible immediate seizure of his assets (bank accounts, houses, cars, etc.) by the IRS for back taxes due on gambling winnings… and that’s just a sliver of what he didn’t have to plead to…

  22. Gindy says:

Ah yes the jesus excuse. Oh lord I am so sorry for killing your creatures, please don’t let “the man” put me away and take my stuff, with the added attraction of poor mama weeping her eyes out that her baby boy is getting his just desserts.
    Just puke…
Every single person who gets caught in the lime light is either one of two things…
belligerent or religiously contrite. Vick has been both in less than one week.
Man he should have taken to the stage in stead of the field… what an actor!

  23. Lynn says:

Doubtful that Vick will ever feel remorse for the animals. He may of course feel remorse for his lost money and prestige and power. His words are meaningless. The success rate in treating people with APD is not very good.

To let him out on the streets is begging for trouble.

BTW - Anyone know what brother Marcus Vick is doing these days? Maybe covertly running another dog fighting ring for his brother?

  24. Moonbeams says:

Of course he’s not sorry for hurting the animals - the animals (DOGS) are nothing to him - just flesh to be brutalized so he can feel like a man. Wonder what’s up with him that he can’t feel like a man unless he is hitting, punching, kicking, or making these poor animals cry in their pain and misery. I bet he laughed at the dogs in their crying pain. Vick is lowlife who just happens to play football and is worth millions - but a lowlife scum sucking pig nevertheless.

  25. Lynn says:

Anyone going to blog the Joyner show tomorrow? I don’t know if I can’t handle any more of Vick’s dysentery statements.

  26. Kiki says:

Immature? I hardly see how brutally slaining dogs is considered to be an immature act. His silence was NOT because he was ashamed. His silence was about the following:

    1. Stay quiet and see if this thing blows over

    2. Stay quiet and try to work out an arrangement with the NFL (to plea or not)

    3. Stay Quiet and confer with lawyers and try to work out the best plea deal

    4. Stay Quiet and hire a PR machine to play the race card, garner racial support and practice the script they made up

    5. Invoke finding Jesus

He did not acknowledge and address the sharp brutality and cruelty of his acts, He did not acknowledge and address the harm to innocent life. He did not acknowledge and address his lifelong bloodthirst for animal violence. He did not admit that he had a serious problem with obtaining pleasure from the pain and suffering of animals….

  27. Moonbeams says:

I wonder if he’ll get as much time as Martha Stewart - and then she got an ankle bracelet too.

He needs to do the max time and why in the world do we have to wait until December to take the man off the streets. I hope he can’t go near a dog? Shouldn’t the judge issue an injunction against Vick from being 100 feet from any dog and also he should never be allowed to own a dog for as long as he lives and perhaps even not permitted to be near his friends dogs either.

His mother? She cried? Well I just wonder what was going on in the Vick household as a young boy that might have contributed to Vick’s present day problem? Just musing. Sometimes there’s no family cause and effect, but one does wonder.

AMEN, SISTER!!! Took the words right out of my mouth!

That fact right there tells me the only things he’s sorry for are getting caught and having to pay for what he did.

Michael Vick, you are a sorry waste of skin. Die. DIEDIEDIEDIEDIEDIE!

  29. ryssee says:

What’s he sorry for? That he got caught?
Happy for him that he found Jesus and all, and I’m not even religious. I hope Jesus makes him do some penance other than what the courts will. Payback in this lifetime and the next.

  30. Pit Bull Lover says:

    “Rocket Docket”

Regarding the speed of this prosecution, there’s this from Wikipedia:

“United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia…earned the nickname, the “rocket docket”, for the speed and efficiency for which it processes its cases. Since 1997, the court has processed civil cases the fastest of the 94 federal districts, and eighth fastest in dealing with criminal cases.”

  31. Vic Should Get What He Deserves says:

DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT WHILE MICHAEL VIC MADE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS BETWEEN HIS “CAREER” AND COLLECTING FROM PITBULL FIGHTS —– THAT IT IS FAIR THAT HE MIGHT GET AWAY WITH ONLY GETTING SENTENCED POSSIBLY TO “ONE YEAR”…. AND STILL BE ABLE TO BE A FALCON WHEN HE COMES OUT?

    MOST DEFINATELY NOT.

WHAT ABOUT THE PAIN & SUFFERAGE OF THESE INNOCENT DOGS INVOLVED IN THE FIGHTING - AND THE DEATHS OF MANY OF THEM AS A RESULT —- HOW MUCH IS THAT WORTH?

YOU CAN’T BRING BACK “DEAD ANIMALS” AND APOLOGIZE FOR WHAT YOU DID ….

MOST OF US KNOW THAT TRAINING PITBULLS FOR FIGHTING, JUST ISN’T RIGHT….. AND NO AMOUNT OF “SORRYS” CAN MAKE UP FOR WHAT VIC DID … HE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO OWN A FLEA AS A PET —

AND WHATEVER “HOME” PETS HE HAS SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM HIS HOME IMMEDIATELY — FOR THE ANIMALS’ PROTECTION!

MOST PITBULLS “NOT FOR PROFIT” OWNERS GIVE THEIR DOGS ATTENTION, LOVE, AND SUPPORT.

    Pitbulls ARE NOT NATURAL-BORN KILLERS.
It is at the OWNER’S FAULT, as to whether or not

the Pitbull BECOMES A KILLER AS A RESULT OF CONSTANT ABUSE THAT IT RECEIVES AND THE VICIOUS TRAINING PROCEDURES IT IS PUT THROUGH.

Pitbulls, really, are as SWEET as can be when bred and/or raised in a
    SAFE & peaceful, caring enviroment.

THESE PITBULLS CAN BE AS GENTLE & LOVING AS ANY OTHER BREED………

    IN THE END..IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS ;

IS THIS RIGHT THAT MICHAEL VIC RECEIVE SUCH A LIGHT SENTENCE…. NO!

TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR PET RIGHT NOW. LOOK AT YOUR DOG…

WOULD YOU TOLERATE THIS HAPPENING TO HIM/HER ?
    DEFINATELY NOT.

WHY NOT STEP IN & TAKE ACTION, TO HELP VOICE YOUR OPINION BEFORE MICHAEL VIC RECEIVES HIS SENTENCE ……

HIS “SORRY” ATTITUDE SHOULD BE IGNORED BY THE JUDGE AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC ….

and the process goes even faster when the defendants start pleading guilty and ratting someone out and then that someone pleas out also, lol!~ ;)

  34. MaineMom says:

Not one word of remorse for what he inflicted on those dogs - throw the book at him!

  35. Sindy says:

The judge owns a bichon frise - that’s good. Since Sicko Vicko (SV) found Jesus, he may want to bone up on the 10 commandments. Here’s the lines he should write 1000 times on the blackboard:
#3 ‘You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.’
SV “Opps, disrespected what’s his name.”
    #6 ‘You shall not murder.’
SV “But I didn’t bet so it’s OK”
#9 ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’
SV “I didn’t commit purgery because I swore on the Bible in court and I believe (now).”

Be careful Sick Vic, you are playing with fire when you involve Jesus to save your butt now.
Remember GOD spelled backward is DOG.

  36. L.B. says:

Yeah, his words sure rang hollow… I guess only God (or maybe a Dog) could ascertain how sincere or insincere he is, but from today’s presentation it just seems like he doesn’t even remotely “get” it.
I wonder if he has ever shed a single tear not for himself, not for his image, his career, his legal troubles or even for his family & friends, but for the animals… just out of empathy for the unjustifiably miserable lives they led.

  37. E Silk says:

I think we are all missing the point here. What is so wrong with our system of government that a murder… yes dogs feel pain.. a murderer can get off as easy as 1 year!? Lets talk about grand left auto for a second. I walk out my front door, hop into my neighbors car and go for a drive. Opps that would get me 4-5 years in prison. What if it was a cop car… I would be locked up for a long, long time. Lets take it a step further… This cop that is arresting me, I decide I’m going to smack him in the face. Opps I’m out for 15 years… Or instead I could go kill, God knows how many helpless dogs for years and years. I could torture them, starve them, force them to fight, let them rip each other apart on a daily basis. Then maybe I will hang them, drown them, anything I want really and I don’t have to worry… I’m only going to jail for one year. ONE YEAR? Where does that make sense?! This B.S. about Vicks so bad (yes, he will rot in hell for this) but what about our justice system that is saying as long as you admit you did wrong, give us money (that sounds like a bribe anyways), and apologize you will only have to serve a year? 12 Months… thats about a day per dog he killed. If the problem of dog fighting is going to ever to be fixed Vick does not need to change; our form of justice needs to change!!! I guarantee if there was a minimum of 10 yrs for fighting dog, there would be a lot less of it. But instead we are pretty much telling America its okay to fight dogs. I could start writing bad checks and goto jail for a year, how does that compare to murder!?

  38. Lynn says:

What is VERY disappointing to me, on top of everything else already mentioned above, is that Arthur Blank is now saying that there’s a possibility that Vick may come back to the Falcons because it might be good for the franchise. So once again, it’s not about principles - it’s about money.

What is it with these wishy washy owners and commissioners? Won’t anyone stand up for what is right? Some of the products did - quite definitively, too. So why can’t the football who*es be REAL men and follow their rules to the letter, be solid role models, show some compassion, and be ethical?

    Shameful.

  39. Animal Chaplain Nancy Cronk says:

If there is anything good about the Michael Vick story, it is that there is an emerging increased awareness about animal cruelty and animal fighting. However…

I think it is a sad commentary that we, as a culture, are using the Vick story to compare “What’s worse?” “What’s worse”, we ask, “carelessly fathering illegitimate children, or dogfighting?”. “Dogfighting or gambling?” “Dogfighting or rape?” “Dogfighting or racism?” “Dogfighting or hateful nationalism?” “Dogfighting or (fill in the blank)….?” The comparisons to dogfighting have been endless.

Dogfighting is one more piece of evidence our country is in need of a spiritual transformation (please note I said spiritual and not necessarily religious). Animals are sentient beings - they feel pain, and they suffer, just like we do. They are not more important, or less important than human beings, but like human beings, they are important, too.

Every major faith teaches its followers to be responsible stewards of animals and the Earth. Please help us get the word out that caring for animals, just like caring for people, is an important part of just being a decent person and citizen. If we make this a priority, there will be no more dogfighting horror stories, and no more pointless comparisons of evils. Let us all rise, together, to be better people than we are today, shall we?
