A Russian woman has 130 cats living in one small Moscow flat. She says that she loves homeless pets and simply wants to help them.
Don’t believe it? Watch the video and see the cats in action.
How many cats do you think is too much?
Here are some pictures of the 130 cats living in the woman’s small flat in Moscow.

Holy mother of pearl! They all appear healthy. That’s nuts. I can’t imagine the smell.
August 8th, 2007 at 5:22 am
They also appear happy. No bad body language. The ears are held high, eyes wide open and relaxed. They all look beautifully groomed. Better than my three cats.
I never saw anything like that video. They were bouncing up like popcorn in a popper. For that many cats to be happy it likely doesn’t smell bad. There would be a terrible stress meltdown if the smell was excess. She must have a pension. I cannot imagine the time to keep that place clean.
As they say, at least it keeps them off the street.

They DO all appear healthy. Amazing!

That poor woman must have alot of love to give. We can only hope that someone or a rescue assists her in finding those beautiful and healthy cats a forever home. Looks like she is doing a fantastic job, but it must be very hard work.

Wow! Pretty small place to have so many cats. They all do look very healthy! You would think the place would really stink and all the cat litter she would have to go through. Wow.. You got to lover her for her effort to care for so many! That is what I call a true cat lover!!!!! But how does she sit down or cook or do anything? There is no room left!
August 8th, 2007 at 10:08 am
That lady must be a genius at cat care! Good for her….the cats look really well cared for.
August 8th, 2007 at 11:01 am
Hee Hee, even Bill Gates couldn’t afford the vet bill!
I wanna see what the litter box looks like.
August 8th, 2007 at 11:14 am
Wow, and I was worried I had too many cats! I only have four! I do feel bad for them, as they seemed REALLY hungry when she was getting the food. I hope they get enough. Glad they seemed healthy though!
August 8th, 2007 at 11:27 am
Wow! They look happy and healthy. The room is set up to be easily cleaned and the cats look at the person with the camera without fear and are relaxed. I’d say she is making the most of what she has to help cats and is doing a great job with limited space!
The chairs are cute, I like that they have a window where several can look out.
August 8th, 2007 at 12:14 pm
I know she means well, but she also may be a cat collector and have mental problems. Those cats would be much happy with more space. Hopefully an animal rescue group can help her place some of those cats. How can she afford the vet bills??
August 8th, 2007 at 12:35 pm
Wow- that’s a lot of cats. I have 7 and wouldn’t want anymore.
August 8th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
She’s nuts - totally nuts. Ten seems a good round number for a small flat - crowded conditions makes animals crazy and I don’t care how high their ears are either. Animals (just like people) need elbow room and fighting for a calm space is nerve racking (wrecking too). The poor cats can’t even escape to calmer ground.
This is tragic!
August 8th, 2007 at 1:24 pm
Moonbeam, the alterative for those cats is homelessness or euthanasia. With a good caretaker, they are better off crowded.
August 8th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
It may be ok to care for 130 cats (some shelters do . . .) but you should have the appropriate space for it, and also, you need volunteers.
No matter how well-intentioned you are, no matter how hard you work to scoop litter, feed, and keep things clean, if the cats go without personal attention for long, many of them will become unsociable, fearful, and hard to adopt.
It must be impossible to do all that for 130 cats — all the feeding, cleaning AND giving personal attention AND trying to find adoptive homes.
I don’t believe in hard limits, but I think you should only try to help as many as you actually CAN help at one time.
I know I can’t handle more than 5 cats . . .

Not only do those cats look healthy but the house looks CLEAN! The floor is shiny white….thats just amazing. I have trouble just keeping up with my cats and the messes they make…I can’t even imagine keeping up will all of them!
Wow.
August 8th, 2007 at 2:29 pm
I agree with Shefani. Those cats may look healthy and happy but knowing cats like I do, they DO need their personal space and their own personal attention, not to mention brushing and health checks! Not possible for one person to do with 130 of them! It would also appear that they were extremely hungry and a few handfuls of dry food isn’t going to do it. I’m sure that some of the more timid ones don’t get fed! As far as the clean room, I’m sure that she knew that she was going to be put on film…..I would seriously doubt that the place is that clean all the time. I hope that she stops her collecting and finds homes for those already in her collection!

There are just limits to what any human can endure, cope with, support, and love and it’s important to honor our limits.
August 8th, 2007 at 3:16 pm
if she didnt have them they’d end up dead which some feel is better then being ‘ ‘antisocial’. funny i have the same feeling about human sociopaths- better kill them then having an antisocial whack job about harming people. i can’t say i would wish that on these feline jumping beans.
truly, it boggles my mind. better the cats dead . i see no animal corpses lolling about- the cats show no obvious signs of neglect. they run to her at meal time which shows they aren’t scared of her thus likely to not be feral. the place is clean.people have a special effection for cats in russia and will squander their own food money on cans of american brand cat food. i’m not entirely sure if they have american style shelters-many places do not. it’s unfair to apply americanized standards to an area that might not have the facilities. and your own personal limits ARE NOT those of another human so why insist on applying your feelings and standards on others you do not know?
if the animals are fine and the woman is fine and there are no cat mummies under the bed-works for me. i couldn’t do it but then again i nver thought i could deal with the 6 i rescued and 20 years on no one could have hoped for sweeter more lovely cats. if i had room i’d definitely have more.
August 8th, 2007 at 3:34 pm
HOLY CRAP! Although the place looks clean, I wonder what it would take to move all the cats to the next room so you can clean. I guess you would just throw a hand full of food on THAT floor to have them migrate there.
What I thought was funny was that when she opened the door one cat goes flying by it for attention.
I’d like to visit this place. What an experience it would be.
This is unbelievable!
I wonder who gets to sleep on the bed?
August 8th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
Looks nice and clean, cats look healthy. Wonder if there’s somewhere with more info on the situation? Hopefully cats are spayed/neutered. And who knows, maybe she does get donations and helpers.
August 8th, 2007 at 4:42 pm
It’s not sanitary, or right, and there’s no way to properly attend or care for so many cats - and you all know it too! And tossing food on the floor just doesn’t cut the grade. Maybe this entire u-tube video is phony - it just sparks of something not right and downright “strange” - twilight zone bizarre.
August 8th, 2007 at 5:10 pm
One thing I find strange is how they go crazy when the lady brings the food, will that many cats all jump over each other like that? Many times, my kitties won’t even look at the food for a while.
August 8th, 2007 at 5:46 pm
Moonbeam,
I think your right. I tried searching for additional information on the story and all that comes up are sites with the same story, pics and video as here. You would think that the person who did the video and pictures would have a lot more to say.
This may be a hoax.
Nonetheless, I love the video.
August 8th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
It’s kind of funny seeing the cats jump up and I wonder if this is a computer generated show? Just a thought.

I don’t know anyone who owns a lot of cats, but I met a woman and her husband who had about 65 dogs on a couple of acres of land. And all the curs slept in the house at night in various rooms, keeping the Alphas apart, and she home cooked for them, rice and eggs mostly, and how many she has now I do not know, but I will say that they did have puppies even though she tried to keep them from reproducing. Well, it’s a long story, but when I visited her, or anyone really, you couldn’t make eye contact with the dogs - they would growl.
The one funny thing is that they had to duct tape the kitchen frig. door closed because the dogs could open it and then they’d have a party eating everything.
She did a pretty good job of taking care of them. She gave them all their shots, and got their meds from the feed store, including any antibiotics when needed. And sometimes they’d fight but she told me she stayed out of their arguments.
It worked for her because of her acreage - and at night they all went in and out the windows as she called them up from the fields. It was some sight.

I saw a still photo about this lady about 3 months ago, there was no video. The crazy way those cats act when the woman walks in seems strange to me. Perhaps it’s been enhanced or some video trick. I don’t know……
August 8th, 2007 at 7:37 pm
wow.. it boggles the mind….
However, they do appear to all be alert and healthy. None appear to be fearful. Amazingly, they all seem to get along — I don’t see any overt signs of fighting. Best of all, I don’t see any kittens! Obviously, these pics don’t show all 130 so it’s possible that she has the little ones segregated but I’m hoping it means the cats are all fixed.
wow… I’ve had the same 8 rescues for the last 10 years and I can tell you that their number will never increase nor will I ever have this many again no matter how much room I have. It’s simply impossible to work, etc., and give them all the individual attention that they deserve.

This story is also on Reuters…it includes a longer video with an interview with the woman.

Cat woman - 130 times
Aug. 9 - A Russian woman has opened her tiny two-room apartment to strangers in need - she’s taken in 130 stray cats.
50-year-old Nina Kostsovo lives in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk. She picked up her first street cat 15 years ago and has since not been able to let a cat in need pass by without helping it.
Sonia Legg reports.

For heaven’s sake, what a bunch of overly opinionated,mean-spirited comments! You people don’t know much at all about this situation, you see clean, healthy cats and you criticize!
For all we know that lady is extremely wealthy and can afford the vet bills. The fact that she is in a small apartment doesn’t mean much in determining her situation - that’s just part of living in Siberia where even the wealthy don’t have much space.
We also don’t know that these kitties are completely indoor cats. They may go outdoors and only come in a feeding time.
How about sending some positive thoughts her way and giving her the benefit of the doubt?!
August 12th, 2007 at 6:51 pm
Thats a lot of broken glass you’d have to add to there food to kill them all. Oh well better start smashing glass.

I have to say, it would be fun. Because if you lived alone, you would never be lonely or would have to sleep alone. But then again it would be tiering. Cleaning the litter boxes about 15 times a day and accidently stepping on them in the middle of the night. I guess the woman is very lonely. And this is a free country, so I see nothing wrong with it. Miss, if you have seen this message, I God bless you and your cats.

Heh - can you imagine the hairballs an the amount of litter she must go through?

They look wonderfully happy and healthy. And obviously well adjusted and not feral. She has to have a huge heart to pay attention to all those cats. I hope that she gets support for the good she is doing.
